Default Rear disc and flange

Hi everyone.

Just wondered if anybody had found an alternative answer to the problem. I'm luck to have a good friend with a lathe (Hi Ian!!) to machine the disc's for me. But did not want to have to do this everytime the disc's are worn!!

John,

As I am sure Ian told you he knows all about it from his mate Nigel setting up my motor.

Invaluable, and he's right on my doorstep.

Suggest you invest in some new discs theres a place in Ilford charging the right sort of prices.

I'm going to start a new post later today.....'Driving a Turbo on the road', hope it makesgood reading.

Hope all is well.

I have new discs already. They just need "adjusting".

Just wonder if they was any other way that people have found to get round this problem.

To install the rear disc's onto the flange, the hole on the disc needs enlarging to fit.

Hi guys,
The best solution would be to machine the driving flange centre to fit standard disc, unfortunately if you have already fitted said flange through hub and bearings then that won't be possible. I only realised this problem when i went to fit discs so had to have discs machined.

I was not aware until Ian (who done Trev's) told me about it. Was going to be one of my next jobs as well. Thinking fitting brakes was going to be a quick job.

Lucky for the knowledge of these guys.. Cheers!!

But as it's been said. It would be beter to machine the flange then the disc. A future plan for me is to get another set of hubs, bearings and flange. Get the flange altered and keep as a spare once the discs have worn.

Default Rear Hubs And Flanges

Gents I am just starting to look at this problem . Has anybody tried packing the flange studs with 3 x 12mm washers (per stud). This will support the brake disk at the required height. The two locating screws will still fit as I have tried it. The only thing I dont know is if the rear caliper will still fit as I have not located my bearings in the Marlin upright yet.

Hi Mike.

I got a friendly 5exi builder with a lathe to do mine. It's only a fraction that needs taking off. Would recommend it to give someone a drink just to shave a litle bit off. Ian on here should be able to describe where to shave.

Mike,

DO NOT pack the discs with washers......far too dodgy on brakes. Also, the disc needs to spin on the same centreline as the hub bearing...to do this the flange sits neatly inside the disc machining (look inside your disc and you'll see this)...if you pack the disc it will not centralise correctly and give trouble....also if you pack the disc your rear track will alter, give you less thread for the wheel nuts to secure to and cause you problems with the caliper mountings as they will then foul the disc.

I had my discs machined out at a local engineers....1 hour labour, £30.

Much safer.

Thanks Rich I can see where your coming from.
I want a permanent fix so will try and get the hubs machined rather than the discs. How dificult is it to remove the studs?

just hammer out, they are splined into flange, just wind on nut to protect threads or use a drift in centre of stud.

I would recommend leaving the hub alone and having the discs done....I reckon a set of rear discs are going to last years on one of these so not too much hassle to machine the next set in about 2009.
