I have to put a heatshield above my silencer because of its proximity to the fuel tank. Does anyone have any experience of this stuff? Some of the proprietary heat sheild material you can buy (for example from Demon Tweeks) cost an arm and a leg - for something that seems to be quite simple.
I re-used the exhaust heatshield from my 5 series donor vehicle (so cost me nothing!). The end result wont win any beauty contests ! (it will be pretty much hidden anyhow) but it should work ok:
It took a bit of "fettling" to get it into the right shape but this is easy to do as its only thin aluminium. The BMW heatshields are also very large so there is plenty of scope to trim them down.
I bought the painfully expensive stuff from Merlin motor sport - seems to work well its the 3 layer stuff. I also have some heat shield matting stuff that I plan to use to fill up the hole between the two mufflers. Although I got that mainly for the firewall / transmission tunnel.
On the subject of heat shields, does anyone know if the Marlin supplied running board/heat shields pass the SVA with all those sharp edges, or do we have to make a replica 'blank' for the test?
