Just wanted to give you a heads up. I applied for SVA last weekend. Got a letter through today stating my chassis number has 19 digits. They need a 17 digit one. Not sure what I'm going to do. I've left a message for Terry to ring me back for advise.
Check yours when next with your pride and joy. I'll let you know how it goes.
I thought I read somewhere that the chassis number can be anything you want, provided it's permanently attached to the chassis (welded plaque for instance). You could just grind the last two digits off?
I had exactly the same issue, they recommended I spoke to DVLA in my case at Brighton, and they did not have any problem with the 19 didgit chasis number, so I told this to SVA, they were happy.
It would be of some help though if in future Marlin stopped putting the last 4 digits for the month and year of manufacture on the chassis plate to avoid this issue, as it will no doubt keep reoccuring.
SVA man is fine with 19 digits....but the registration inspector WILL NOT let you have a 19 digit VIN. 17 is the max.
My inspector took the first 17 digits only, as the last 2 digits are year of manufacture (05 in my case)
Inspector did say DO NOT tamper with the numbers or grind them off as then the VIN looks 'well dodgy' and you'll have problems getting registration etc.
Just for the record, I wasn't suggesting leaving the VIN plate in a DODGY state! I was meaning more that the number your car has on it doesn't mean a thing.

When you say the inspector will not allow 19 digits, does he mean on the form that needs filling out? My fear is the registration inspector will take one look at the plate on the chassis, and say ah ha 19 digits. No good.
