My Exi was first registered Sept 06...and the V5C says that. Also says no previous keeper....and was allocated an 'R' plate for the 97 model year donor.
Q. Do I need an MOT this Sept...or does the '3 years from first registration rule' still apply as with production cars?
My understanding it assues the details in so much as the age of the car, hence MOT`s are required, in the case of age related registering, when the donor is over 3 years old.
When i registered by robin hood in May 2002 i was told by a a very nice lady at Bornemouth DVLA who was up to speed on kit cars that the regs had just changed and that a mot was Not required until the third year. when my friends car that was registered just after mine, tax reminder showed a Mot was required the first year we queryed it with DVLA and they changed to 3 years.
You'd think there would be a cut and dried answer to this one but looks like people have had different experiences.
To my mind unless the car was issued with a current age related plate ie Sept 06 then '56' then it would need MOT'ing every year. The fact that you've got a 97 age related number would suggest this....but then the V5C says otherwise?? Think you really need to get this clarified with DVLA/VOSA, it would be logical to me that you can't have one without the other.
If you didn't get an answer before the 'MOT was due' then I would get it done regardless to satisfy your insurance if nothing else.
I've e-mailed VOSA enquiries today so hopefully should get a definitive answer shortly...

Hmmm well I cant comment on your car Rich! But I have driven the Marlin demo and have been in tons of Elises and the elise in any form would absolutely and totally kill in every way the marlin demo which IMHO was piss slow....leading me to build the type r... But the demo car did stink of fuel and is surely not typical of the 1.6 110 hp cars/ cant see how it could be maybe it was not running right?
Having not driven the 1600 marlin demo, I cannot comment, but, the Elise may win, although I would not expect an anilation. Dylon had an elecronic speedo, and he was downloading figures of 0-60 in 5 to 5.5 seconds, much like the Elise.
Obviously the turbo and type r boys may well beat, the K series, but BHP figures are better to boast about in the pub over a pint, bit like mines bigger than yours.
I'm pretty certain there was something up with the Marlin demo car, be it they put a stop on the throttle to prevent potential customers from getting into trouble, or the engine was seriously off colour!
I drown down to Marlin's factory, for the test drive, in a Mondeo TDCI, and when I got back in the Mondeo, it felt much quicker!
There's not a massive power difference between a 1.6 and 1.8 vvc, so driver skill, and chassis competence, will have the biggest impact on track? Staright line stuff is no fun......
I went for a test drive in the Silver Demo one. Brought a smile to my face. Much like mine when I went to the Pre MOT. Running at 7 PSI for a little while, lowest boost, and while boost was on (Boost pipe kept blowing off), it felt marginally quicker than the 1.6 K. I turned the boost up (reading 9 on the guage, standard is 11.5), and the car turning scary fast. Especially with the skiddy brakes.
But onto the orignal subject. I'll ask the SVA man today if you need a MOT after 1 year. It might put him off to give me a pass.
Just spoke to DVLA, and I need an MOT before registering!
On another note, I asked two SVA guys re MOT after 1 year of registration.
After some head scratching, one guy said the problem he has when he done his, was legally, 3 years from date of 1st registration. But you try and get a tax disc after your first year. If online system says you need one, then there is no other way.
