Ric H's solution is the best I've seen so far - an additional moulding on the underside of the standard dash.

Thanks! I made the pod out of mdf and hardboard, covered in fibreglass tissue then got the whole thing flocked so it looks like one moulding:
I'm happy - works well and only intrudes very slightly into the passenger footwell. Only change I would make if doing it again would be to recess the radio so the dials were flush with the sides of the pod, if you see what I mean. Can't go too far back though, or the radio hits the heater.

What type of aerial did you use, and where did you locate it?

Looks good Rich. I'm going to have to be a bit different again. Same idea but that can house two 1 DIN fitments. One for the radio and one for the boost controller.

Pod was glued and screwed to the dash moulding and reinforced with fibreglass. I found once the dash was extended down it then became very flexible at the radio pod, so I diagonally braced it back up to the top dash surface with a couple of alluminium tubes glassed in place.
Aerial - good question: I haven't really bothered yet. I ran an aerial lead fronm the radio behind the dash and out into the driver-side fibreglass moulding. The plan is to have a simple wire antenna stuck inside the fibreglass panel (my ham radio friend tells me this will work a treat). However, at the minute the coax is still just tied inside the panel in a coil with about 6" stripped and separated at the end, and it works fine!

Ditto Rich, John and I were talking about the lower dash section being like Jelly a few weeks ago and that we have both strenghtened said section.
As far as radio location goes mine will be in the same place as the elise as my gauges took priority in middle section!
