I think the auto-vent is pretty important too, as there's no way for the tank to vent otherwise (at least there isn't when using the Rover 200 k-series pump as a lift pump).
Did you connect the top of the tank to the bottom of the filler neck still? Or did you fit it to the top ot the neck? As this seems to be the best place to fit the hose to. Not the sloping section.

I did much the same as Craig. It holds very well, as prior to fitting the tank vent, the pressure that built in the tank on a hot day was quite alarming!

I presume the vent you're referring to, is the filler vent. That needs to stay, as it's there to aid the filling process.
Demon Tweeks link - yes, same valve. If you buy from them, MAKE SURE YOU CALL TO ORDER, as they cocked up both my order, and Craigs, by not sending the part specific nut.
