Hi everybvody, Im Rob and from cornwall (hence the name) I am only 19 and would like to build a kit car, i got the tools and the skills but dont want to be spending money on building one if i cant insure it. Im not worried about cost of insurance as i currently drive a toyota celica so it cant really get much more expensive. The only factor at the moment is am i going to find a company willing of insuring me?

The car id like to build is a "locost", does anyone know if i should try and find someone who will let me drive it or is it a waste of time for a few years?

Hi Rob,
'Locost' is a very generic term these days relating to a car built from plans published in a specific book. Many companies have productionised the car so you don't have to weld your own chassis if you don't want to so you should be able to find a demonstrator to drive.

My 15 year old son is building a Luego Velocity with a 1100cc Kent engine and has been quoted £750 as a 17 year old new driver, so kits are actually cheaper than equivalent hatchbacks! 1100 cc might not sound much, BTW, but in a lightweight car it's plenty.
Footman James provided the quote for him so try a few quotes with different engine sizes to see what you can afford...

I wouldn't have thought you would have any problem as long as you're not maxxed to the hilt with points on your license

Insurance on kit cars seems very favourable for the younger generation when compared to the run of the mill Novas, Saxos etc.

Ring up a few insurance companies that are listed on this site under the 'Support services' section and find out - bit of leg work required but it's the best way.

ideal. a friend of mine has been looking for kit car insurance for months and no one will touch him as he is too young at 18.

I did tell him id find one that would.

The engine id like to use is an escort rs turbo engine and a sierra gearbox and diff.

I know what you are saying about being light weight and so long as it handles it will be fun to drive but i like my power.

A 1300 in a 500kg kit car is more than a match for the avarage 'hot hatch'

Yet power is nothing without ability.

im not looking to play with hot hatches, been there and done that.

and as you can probably appreciate driving in cornwall and the shockingly miles of lanes that are available to rant around are quite good training.

Off now to phone some insurance companies

cornwall tis my favourite place for said reason, but that was in the days before the scameras.
