Help needed with rear rover calipers???

28 Jul 2008, 9:21am
One of my failure points was the rear brakes binding! I'm trying to sort this now and have the rear wheels off the car.

Does the rover calipers have any special procedure for winding in the piston?
I can wind them both out with no problem but they wont wind back in!
They wind ok but will not go back in?

Cheers for any advice

Hi Craig,

I had to wind mine in to fit the pads. The process is to wind the piston in the opposite direction to winding out I uses a pair of long nosed pliers to get a grip in teh slots. It doesnt look like its having any effect at first but then suddenly it goes in.

Cheers

Having just fitted my rears for what I hope is the final fit I understand you problem.

I guess you are using new callipers, the pistons should wind all the way into the housing and flush with the boot. If your not getting any wind in you have come off the end of the internal self adjust screw.

To get it back on you need to overcome the friction of the piston seal on the end of the piston, you can apply some pressure but make sure you are square onto the housing and the screw and it will all wind back in on its self.
You do not need to assemble the pads tight onto the disk just close enough to operate, as it will self adjust after a short drive, some suggest that applying the brakes while reversing makes the auto adjust snap into action better.

On the subject of 'no adjustment left - SVA test feedback' I was in a similar position with the handbrake position so I have fitted a uni-strut extension to the cable end stop.

I have moved the stop back by the mounting bolt holes spacing ( and another was drilled just in case).

Hope this helps

I got a wind back tool from the local motor factors. Attaches to a ratchet. But if you have recon or new calipers should be ok. If there used ones, I can point you to a tutorial of reconning the rear calipers.

Cheers for replies guys!

I have them sorted now, I had too much pre-load on the master cylinder which was locking pressure into the rear line and hence the binding rear brakes!!

John c, Funny you should put up pics because I have had to move my mount points back today as it was the only solution I could see that was easy. It gave me that extra 1/2 inch that I needed.

I phoned newcastle today for my re-test and they offered me 3pm today but car not ready with me being away last week. Anyway I have my re-test next thursday at 1pm, could of had it sooner but I'm at work!!

All my points have been done now apart from insulating some terminals and wiring the hazard switch to flash with lights so should be done by close of trade tomorrow.

I'm going to take the car to kwikfit to get the brakes tested either tomorrow or wednesday as you are allowed to drive it on roads legally as long as you have an appointment somewhere.

Ps I guess that my failure puts the (no welding involved in the kit) into doubt
