Tyre speed ratings and the SVA

28 Aug 2008, 12:40pm
Question for those of you that have SVA'd (A bit like medal'd LOL)

What speed rating are your tyres and did the SVA man check.

I guess in theory at least the Sportster is capable of exceeding the H tyre limit of 130mph (although I don't think I would like to be in one at the time....)

How does the SVA rate the top speed of a car anyway?

Cheers

SVA man looks at the form and the rating on the tyre so put down a speed below the rating on the tyre :) That's all you have to do.

My tyres are V (149mph I think?) I put down 120mph IIRC or 130.

They don't actually test to see how fast the car goes.

OK thanks - I was hoping that was the case as there is a lot more tyre choice at the H rating (and they are cheaper!).

What size are yours? I think I'm going to try Yoko c.drives as they're about £50 each in 205/60/R15 :)

I have 16" rims. Where did you see the Yoko's at that price? Most tyres seem to be around £70 plus at that size.

+ £10 shipping and then you need to get them fitted.

I've not tried call my local tyre place yet (Micheldever) but they are normally the same sort of prices as these mail order places.

Also check out www.mytyres.co.uk

I've been thinking about getting 16" alloys as the size would suit the car better IMO. But Image = expensive and with the cheapers one's I can't find ones I like!

That's strange. On blackcircles, for some reason the 16" Yoko's are hugely more expensive at £84.66. I might give them a call....

My tyres a 'V' rated but that is only because thats what was already fitted to the set of alloys I bought.
Yes, the SVA man did check all 4 and as Patrick said, they use what you put on the form and can't really challenge it unless you put something silly like 60mph.
I put 120mph as that is the maximum speed on my speedo dial. It's a fail if your speedo won't read the maximum speed you put on the form!

I've used Blackcircles 4/5 times and their service is very good but they seem to be getting less competitive.

I've not used them but these guys seem to have good prices...

hmm I have read that 16's are more expensive due to being a "rarer" size, but then 17's are a bit more again.

EPIC fail from Blackcircles. I ordered these and not only do they not have any stock they only ship Yoko's to garage addresses. WHY let me order them an not say that they won't ship them to me.

Might drop him a note, I was having a bad day yesterday too which didn't help

I've been recommended some AVS dB's by Micheldever (cheaper than the c.drives £55 fitted each instead of £75 - they don't have the c.drive's in stock either). Will see what they are like. I've getting them with a V rating up to 149.

Richard's at home today so he's going to trundle up there and get them fitted :)

Just ordered some 205/55/R16 Yoko's from mytyres.co.uk. I used this place previously for some (expensive) tyres for my motorhome and they were very good. It will be interesting to see how they do this time.

Price was £64 each delivered. Local tyre fitting place said he would fit them at a tenner each. Interestingly the 55 profile is considerably cheaper than the 60 - I think its because it is much more common. Only effects the overall diameter by about 20mm.

Excellent, I've not had a chance to take the car out for a drive yet but Richard says the AVS db's are very quiet. Total price ended up £130 fitted (they didn't give me the with VAT price on the phone).

Been for a short drive now and so far I'm impressed with the Yoko's. Grip seems very good and you can't hear them. Now only the bridgestone's on the front make a bit of noise. Once they are worn down I'll swap them out too. The grip from a standing start is a lot better then the worn out RE720's as well, squeel a bit though when you try too hard

Hopefully it'll be dry over the weekend so I can go for a longer trek.
