I have the V5 for my donor - but just to be on the safe side, I sent an email with the donor chassis number to BMW customer info, requesting the info on the car.
I've just got a reply back saying that they no longer supply this info by email, and that I have to ring a premium rate phone number to get the info. No mention was made of getting a hard copy of the info to show the IVA inspector.
Is there anything on the birth sheet that isn't shown on the V5? I've used a Vin decoding website to find out the date of manufacture of the car (Dec 1985).

I think that you only need the birth sheet if you don't have the V5 from the donor.
The only things they seemed interested in was at the IVA the engine number, or something indicating the age of the engine so the correct emissions test can be performed. The V5 lists the engine number, so provided you can find that on the block then its a done deal.
DVLA for registration were sent the V5, I don't know if they even looked at it I just got it back with all the other documentation. DVLA only checked the VIN on the Marlin and took at face value my assertation that all the bits had come from a single donor.
I got an email from BMW Customer Service confirming the date of manufacture of the donor car (with the assumption the engine was made just before that) (as I didn't have the V5) but the nice Taunton IVA man didn't even ask for it, just asked the age of the engine and took it from there...
Have decided to get mine finished despite current lack of finances, IVA re-test booked for next Monday. Got most of the fail points sorted out, couldn't do much with the emissions (?) and the speedo is not calibrated yet - I've resorted to an aftermarket thing because I couldn't get the E46 ECU to send the correct pulse to the E36 diff. Hmmph. Have set it to 9800 pulse per km but its reading much too low, and the minimum setting is 8000, worryingly. Ah well, an excuse for another little drive tomorrow
Good luck with the re-test Tim. Glad you are carrying on with the build. My tester did miss a couple of things on the re-test because he hadn't recorded them on the fail sheet!
