I've been colour spotting for the last few months try to decide what colour to have my car painted.

I've narrowed it down to four. Two BMW colours, one Fiat and one Lotus.

Difficult to see on line but there are some pictures on-line on my Flickr site....

I like the Mini colour, but there isn't much in it except BMW Imola rot II seens, as you say, a bit too maroon.

I can see you have been practising your spraying skills ;-).

I am also "going red" but have decided to go slightly darker and have chosen Audi Amulet red. Good idea to do a test run first though as you have done.

As for choice - In my opinion colour is one of those very personal things. My best advice is to make up you own mind (taking into account the opinion of her indoors of course....)

Peter - My vote goes for the Mini shade as well. That or just continue the alternating scheme all over the car!

Just a bit of fun with some rattle cans. I'm no good with spraying so won't be attempting the full job. To be honest I used some proffesional touch up spray cans which have much better nozzles than your avarage can.

Audi Amulet red - wow, that is a hot red, we'll need our sunglasses!

I think my problem is that all four colours were chosen because I liked them, so narrowing down to one is difficult. I think any of them would look good and the Sportster tends to look good in the darker colours.
I guess the final decison will be when I book the spray job.....

Ah, sorry, I did a very quick google and thought it was that bright red Audi colour you often see on the road.

This one is bit like the BMW Imola Rot II, but maybe even darker.
Quite a classic car dark red. The BMW red is my wife favourite but a little to dark and too much 'blue' for me.

Everyone who visits our house gets treated to the "Which Red do YOU like?" test. Which my kids find very boring.

The paints4u cans are good, but wear a mask because they contain some very strong 'pong'.ainkiller:

It's called (according to the site I found the image on) metallic RUBY II

Probably a bit dark for you though

nice! ive been tempted by the mini chilli red myself as had always planned on a darkish yet brightish red... just wondering if its possible to do the paint job oneself as money is getting tight these days...

In fact, in reality, amulet red is not as dark as the sample would have you beleive. Here is a car painted in it.



I still plan to polish the bonnets which should be a good contrast to set off the red.

Thanks for the warning about the paint pong! I was planning on buying some masks in preperation for the main paint job. Fortunately (or unfortunately when it is cold) my garage isn't attached to the house so at least the whole place won't smell of paint!

I am planning on doing the painting myself to which end I have bought a proffesional HVLP spray unit. Watch this space (as they say)...

Paint options......

I started to look at some of the details of painting the car.
I'm thinking about some of the smaller parts like the curved filler piece at the bottom edge of the windscreen and the scuttle filler panel under the bonnet.

I've seen examples of both in Black, Polished ali or Colour coded.

Marlin's last demo car had both in black but i'm wondering if they just forgot to get them painted. The windscreen piece polished looks nice but will need to kept polished.

I'm thinking I might just get them both colour coded.

I would colour code them, everything on mine is colour coded except the front wings - didn't want to add much more weight to they are just lacquered

Subject to discussion with my chosen paint shop man, this is the colour!

Yes, I think this was taken in the USA sunshine, so it looks quite a bit darker under a British cloudy sky.......

I take it you have booked the Sportster in to be painted! Did you get a good price...

Hi Robin,
yes, it is a metallic paint and the first batch of panels should be going to the paint shop next Saturday. (He didn't want all the panels together).
Good price? Well I guess that'll depend on the quality of the job. The guys (two brothers) seem to know what they are talking about, but time will tell.

Then it's on to the final assmbly stage.......(only a mere 6 years since I collected my chassis!)

PS Having the instrument cluster wired in is working so far...

It seems to go under varous names like Matador Red or Mesa Red but its paint code is 3R1.

Looks like you are going to beat me to it then. I am still planning on a DIY paint job but it will have to wait until the weather warms up...

BTW - how will you get the rear tub to the spray shop - will it go in the back of your car?

Only 6 years. Beat you, it took me 7!

I found re-assembling took a lot longer than I planned.

That's how I got mine back from Exeter, in the back of the Laguna - along with the bonnet parts and the exhaust system

If it's dooable in a hatchback, I'm sure it's dooable in an estate.

Mind you, on the way back you'll be making a lot of individual runs. You wouldn't want that nice new paint rubbing against each other. :/

Blankets and old sheets are very helpful when transporting multiple bits
