I've been browsing the intermahweb again (as you do), and found this:

It looks a brilliant (if a touch expensive) way of getting your car in the air to work on without faffing around with ramps and axle stands and such. As it looks as if I'm going to be doing a lot of the servicing on the - ahem - 'fleet' now, I'm seriously thinking about finding out how much it would cost to get one shipped to the UK.

According to the blurb you can put it in your trunk. I'd like to see you carrying that around on/in a Sportster!

Yeah - expensive. But the idea is great, and it's so compact when broken down.

After servicing the Laguna using my normal car ramps and scaring Pauline to death as I drove on to them I'd like something a bit better / safer to get the cars in the air.

Trying to find suitable axle stand points for modern cars is a pain.

The tilting lift looks interesting - I'd like to see how it's locked off level though.

Car Mechanics magazine did some comparisons Jul/Aug 2009. They looked at light weight solutions right through to simple 4 posters have a look at these:

The Hammer lift is a great idea, but too big for my confined garage. The Strongman stuff looks very similar to the CJ lifts - in fact the mini tilter is exactly the same!

I've look at some of these as well I would need something that will support up to a 2 ton BMW 840. A lot of the constructions seemed pretty feeble of precarious and also need to work inside a double garage (two doors ) as the driveway is at too much of an angle.

Practical Classics often have two or three adds from vendors of car lifts. One of the ones I quite like is the one that looks like a set of ramps folded flat. You drive over it then use a hydrailic pump to raise it up.

The more I look, the more I'm starting to sway toward the levo artis setup. Looks sturdy, less likely hood of a car slipping off than those tipper thingies and the 2000Kg one would take the S-Type, never mind the Laguna or Vikki. Wheels off can be done with the bridging parts that they can make up for you to your specs / widths.

I could hang the ramps on the wall when not in use, and stack the supports under the work bench.

Seems to be quite reasonably prices as well, for what it is.

I agree. What a clever idea and simple as well which means nothing to go wrong. It always makes you wonder why it hasn't been done before! And they are British!

It's an interesting way of lifting the car - and quite compact.

Interesting indeed although "Lifting capacity 1.5 kg" 1 wheel weighs more than that - I joke

Thread resurection! (well, it is nearly Easter...)

I'd forgotten to tell you I managed to get a lift. It's a mid rise scissor, which I got second hand off eBay. It was sold by Holden Classics (so I imagine it was bloody expensive when it was new ), but it cost me £600 + the van hire to collect it.

It's capable of lifiting 2 Tonnes, and handles the Jag very easily. It's portable (to a point) - You can roll it outside for more room if neccessary, and when you drop it of it's castors it sits directly on the ground.

The power unit is on wheels, and I've added a quick hydraulic connector so that once it's at the height you want it, I can lock it off on the frame to take the weight of the ram, and then disconnect the fluid pipe and coil it out of the way.

I't already paid for itself, doing services on the Jag and the Golf, Full Brake overhauls on each of them and the bearing change on the Jag. I've even done my mates Passat, and I've done a couple of oil changes for other friends.

Without a doubt, it's one of the best buys I've ever made. Vikki is sat on at the moment, awaiting her suspension rebuild, and with a touch of a button I can raise her up or drop her down to whatever height is comfortable. Bliss!
