i am looking at building a car. but my first question is about registration. what parts do you have to use to get an age related plate ? new plate (i guess is all new parts) ?
Best route is to at least photocopy the donor's V5 before notifying Swansea that the car has been scrapped. The V5 should contain the engine number, which can be checked when you register the car. Also when you go through IVA the logbook can be used as evidence of the engine's age and the appropriate emissions test can be applied.
Take and keep plenty of build photos to provide more evidence that you dismantled the donor, and built the kit. - I had trouble convincing VOSA that I had done all the work myself.

is there a link somewhere that tells me all the bits and bobs they look at when going through the new iva . (is it as big a pain in the tail pipes as what i have been reading)
As for a new registration, I believe you are allowed up to 1 major referbished component on the car and still qualify:

I think that most of the builders on this site have managed to get their cars through IVA without too much difficulty. Mine failed first time round on the VIN plate, some wiring that needed sleeving, and some exposed sharp bolt heads and other items around the front suspension.
Get an old q plater silly money on eBay and they are less strict with mot requirements then you could spend a fair amount on upgrades etc that's what I'm doing
