MOT without Wipers

Have any of you put a Sportster through its MOT without windscreen wipers when its equipped with a tilt and slide front screen ?
If so did it pass ?

If I remember correctly, the size and height of the 'windscreen' determines whether you need wipers etc. The IVA manual has the exact figures. The size permitted for not having wipers is quite small - so aero screens will be ok but the standard Marlin windscreen won't be.
The usual route is to forget the windscreen until after IVA.
I guess this doesn't answer your question exactly as you asked about MOT but the two shouldn't be far apart!

Thanks Tim,

Therefore as it has the standard Marlin screen then it will fail the MOT. so if I remove the screen altogether that would surely be acceptable. True or not ?

Any answers or speculation would be welcome as that is my dilema.

Hi Dennis,
I would present it for the MOT without the windscreen and with the windscreen pillars removed.
I would also temporarily cover the pillar holes with some kind of trim so it is not obvious the screen has just been removed. The pillars are bolted to the chassis beneath the dashboard so quite easy to remove.

My concern would be that if you ask for an MOT with the screen fitted and it fails it will be recorded as a failure on the MOT computer system. If you then go back without the windscreen it might be difficult to explain away.

Driving my Sportster without the windscreen was certainly exciting but do get yourself some decent goggles or safety glasses. Surprisingly. my wife complained the car was 'less fun' when I fitted the windscreen but it is a lot more practical with the weather in this country.
We had a memorable trip the first year all the way to Brighton and back with no windscreen. It was a gloriously hot day and we travelled back late in the evening. Driving in the dark with no windscreen was great fun!!

I hope you get it passed and your on the road soon,

MOT without wipers

Hi Peter,

Tomorrow I am going with the garage owner and his trailer, so will have to get him to drop me at home instead of taking it to the garage. Because it was going to have its MOT on Monday. I will have to come clean with him. He is a great guy and has looked after my TT for years. So I may be lucky.

MOT without wipers

As today was forecast with rain, we decided to collect the Sportster yesterday. This we did and I posed the question of "no wipers" to the garage owner who I had hired to collect it.
On posing the question " Would it fail its MOT as it does not have wipers". Bearing in mind it had passed previously. His answer was "If they are fitted then they are tested but if it does not have them then you cannot test so it will not fail"

Excellent news from my point of view. Hope the rest of the car is fine.

Thanks for all your help.

He sounds like a very understanding MOT tester.
Good luck with the rest of the test tomorrow,
