I set out to trial fit the engine today. I wanted to see how the alternator may fit, whether I needed an access panel for the clutch slave cylinder, where the gear stick hole should go, etc,etc,etc.

But the trial fit was such a trial that it's now in permantly.

I'm suprised by the angle of the engine to the centre line. From the front it must be 5 to 10 degrees to the left of centre (although it matches up perfectly with the pre drilled holes in the gearbox mounting bracket.

Has anyone else experienced the same.

I haven't fitted the gearbox bracket yet. The gearbox is strapped up with rope. Does anyone have any thoughts on height of the bracket in the transmission tunnel. I'm inclined to fix the bracket so it lines up with the bottom of the tunnel but has anyone done anything different.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Well done!
I guess we really need a M50 builder to comment, but it looks good to me. I think the BM engines are at this angle to fit under the bonnet.
I lined up my gearbox bracket so that the top of the engine was horizontal (front to back).
However, I think now with hindsight, I would not fix it permanently until you've got the gear lever and propshaft fitted. You can then make sure everything lines up and there is clearance between the bottom of the gear lever and propshaft flange.
Maybe fix it with a couple of g-clamps for now and drill the holes later when you've checked all the clearances.
