Sweet sound

30 Jan 2012, 9:18pm
Monday 30th.....the sweet sound of a straight 6 roared to life and growled like a wild beast...as many know, I have had a problem with spluttering, backfires and misses, poor idle, not taking throttle, engine sounding sick as a pig.Dianostics kept pulling faults such as icv, tps ,02 sensor, aril intake sensor and maf. As my engine is 20 years old, e36 2.5 i, I tried to work through all of the above, testing all components. I have replaced some of the above(if not all), maybe even new coil packs, and still the same problem.Last week I removed the swirl pot from the equation, and also had my injectors refurbed, and rebuilt the manifold with all new gaskets.Started up on Saturday, same problem.....but this time diagnostics showed only 1 fault code 26,control unit supply voltage..... battery good, check charging..alternator charging..then not, then charging, then not, a faulty plug connector the culprit......fixed this and then......sweet music,oh so sweet(don't ask how much that music cost)! The ecu was not operating correctly due to fluctuating voltage supply...onward and upward.....mike shall we try and iva this summer(gauntlet thrown down)!

Well don Jeremy!!!!

Go on mike - go for it!

Jeremy

Well done!
This is interesting. Do you know where your ecu takes its supply from?
I have simply copied Nigels advice to get my engine running, and have taken a permanent live straight from the battery to the engine wiring loom, so there should be no question of irregular supply.
However, Nigel advised I might find an issue with not generating a switched earth for the fuel pump relay. Do you know how your sparky dealt with this?
If you have the ability to fault diagnose your engine, does this mean your sparky wired in the on on board computer? How did he deal with the data transfer that went off to the instrument binnacle?
I think Nigel has ignored these: I certainly have. I thought I would not be able to make use of the diagnostic port. However, you have shown that it can be done, and is very useful too.
I would love to know how your sparky achieved this?

And well done again.

As for the IVA gauntlet, I've already promised my wife I'll get my Cabrio on the road this year, so that is enough of an incentive for me!!!!!!!! And you've got a little bundle of joy coming along, which you don't realise yet, but means your whole life gets turned upside down, and put on hold for the next 15 years!!!!!! No playing with kit cars for you.............there'll be a nappies to change and thousands of other things to do before playing with the Sportster!!!!
You'll love it all though.

Mike

Wiring

Mike, I will ask him, as I have a couple of things I want to change...although I am not totally sure, I believe the m50 does not have the same problem as the m52 engine which Tim has installed with regard to the instrument cluster, and so can be easily bypassed, there was no immobiliser, or smart key in the early e36 m50,so wiring was fairly straight forward.Having kept the diagnostic plug and system is a bonus, have other builders kept there's?

Well done,.............. it's always the simple things that are hard to find!
Can you explain which 'plug connector' was faulty, so that others can check?

Congratulations Jeremy. A great joy. And a great relief after all that fault finding. It is a lovely sound when it finally bursts into life.

As Mike says its interesting to hear that you have left the diagnostics in there and that they still work for you. I took a risk by leaving mine out but I think the M52 set up is much more comlicated than the M50 so Mike and I were able to get away with it. The only problem we have is the earth for the fuel pump relay which is provided by a transistorised switch in the ECU, which is turned on by a code from the OBC which we don't have any longer. But having provided an alternative earth it all seems to be OK.

I'm intrigued by your fault though. The output from the alternator and the +ive battery are electrically common so I wonder why the battery wasn't effectively masking the dodgy connection on the alternator. Maybe it was simply the voltage spikes as the connection was made and broken that that upset the ECU.

Spikes

Yes, I think it's intermittent pulsing was the problem was the problem, and as I have been using a red top battery, it was under performing as it wasn't being charged properly.I am using a Lucas LRA 460 or 24157 alternator(easily viewed on google), and the connector on the alternator had a wire in it making poor contact.

Well done, Jeremy! I admire your persistence and am glad it paid off!
Now just the simple challenge of IVA :)
