Hi, I'm new, please forgive me for being one of the many who treats spanners like wall-art.
I'm a novice when it comes to cars. I can maintain the basics, replace brake discs/pads on a honda jazz or old renault clio etc but thats about it.
My main question is simple.
If you had to build a practical family car where would you start?
Is it doable with a kit?
I don't suppose many 'replica' car companies have looked at halving the production cost of a kia cee'd or VW golf.
There used to be lots of options within the kit car scene.
I ran a midas gold coupe for 2 years as a daily driver including trips to europe on holiday.
The quantum coupes and convertibles, ginetta g26-32, rickman metisse were all very easy to live with every day.
The scene has changed quite a bit and most kits are now specialist toys, not so practical but depending on your needs there maybe a few that you could choose.
How many seats you need, what type of car do you have in mind?
I'm thinking Small family car. I drive a Honda Jazz atm. I'm good with the size of the car and tbh the engine will go forever. But one day I'd just like more power and a sense of achievement with the car. So if I start thinking about it myself now, maybe I can learn how to bang one together in time. :P
Essentially, fit a couple of kids (eventually), drives like a standard 1.6-1,8 family car, can fit life stuff (shopping, buggies etc).
Due to the lack of as you say "practical" kit cars these days, I would say try and get hold of an old Quantum 4 seater and rebuild it, it should already be registered and it should be complete or near enough. As long as you take good enough notes and enough photos to fill a barn, you will have a good pattern and reverse build manual to work from.

Have you had a look at Extreme sports cars? They do a Farrari 360 and 430 based on a pug 406. They can still have the same interior (4 leather seats, air con etc) but just look very nice. They could be used as every day cars just like the Peugeot that they are based on.
