I was under my Cabrio today and noticed that in several large areas the powder coating had disappeared and instead I had bare patches of metal with rust starting to form.
Any ideas on the best way to proceeed? Some bits were around the diff mounting points and I dont fancy a total strip and rebuild.

The dreaded powder coating started to peel off in sheets on my Hunter under the wings where it is seen. I found that a paint scraper would lift it off quite easily followed by a good wire brushing. I then used Finnigans smoothrite (brushed on is the most practical) as the Black semi matt is a good match. Once it all gets dirty it blends in well with the original very well. The great thing is that paint is designed to go straight on over rust and bonds to it really well. If you use 2 coats heed the instructions about applying within a time limit of the first coat or else you have to roughen it up with emery which is a pain. Peter.
It makes you wonder whether powder coating is worth it compared to a realy good paint job? is it a case of the King's new clothes?
A lot of the powder coating on my chassis is rubbish quite honestly and it chips at the slightest knock! - John
I suspect that it is all down to the preparation. If I were applying powder coat I would want first of all to remove all the sharp edges and corners that cause the coat to be very thin locally , then I would want the surface fine blasted to give a good "key" lastly I would want the whole thing degreased. I know for sure that most of the peeling on my chassis and suspension has started at sharp edges. I doubt if the chassis on our cars were blasted before the powder coat was applied and maybe not the suspension parts either. Likewise degreasing. Peter.
powder coat would be far better if the chassis had been prepared properly before it was coated :/ mines got patches all over the bottom that I touch up whenever its on the ramp.
I remeber Terry almost squealing when I suggested I wanted my chassis self colour,as I could get it painted at work - I have long suspected she was horried that I would see the bright rust on the raw materials they used.
It certainly was not properly prepared for the powder coating, and had rust coming through in a matter of weeks.
On a more positive note "80" seems good stuff if it lives up to what it says on the tin.
