Ageless Plates
A quick trawl of websites selling Reg. Numbers gave me two choices:
- Ex-Northern Irish plates (< £100) in the style Letter, "I", Letter + 4 numbers
- Traditional plates (£300 to £400+) as 3 Letters + 3 Numbers (or vice versa)
Are the NI plates cheap because they are the motoring equivalent of a fashion faux pas?
Or should I grab a bargain and ditch my existing "V" reg?

Front Number Plate Mounting
The only rules I could find were as follows:
... a registration plate must be fixed on the front of the vehicle vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable...
So I think that makes the traditional stick on number plate on the bonnet legal.
Which is a good thing given that almost everyone has done that on their builds.
DaveCymru has one of the few cars I've seen with a vertically(ish) mounted front plate.

Traditional Classic Car Plates
- Black background with silver, white or grey letters & numbers
- Only allowed if car was manufactured before 01/01/73
Modern Car Plates
- White background for front & yellow background for rear
- Both with black letters and numbers
- Required if car was manufactured after 01/01/73
So you can put modern style plates on an old car, but you can't put old style plates on a new one.
And by "new", I mean the relatively new, 32 year old spring chicken of a donor Spitfire I have.
Obviously not an issue for those of you with the more elderly Herald donors.
