Can anyone recommend a rust removal liquid? I am treating some steel wheels. They are not hugely rusty but I think it needs to be a liquid to get into all the nooks and crannies.
I used something last year that was very good - but blowed if I can find the original container with the name. You mixed it with water as I remember to make up about 5 litres and it was green.
I am sure I recommended it to someone on the forum but I can't find the post either...
Hammerite do a good one, also available as a green gel which may be better as it will stay in place - may not be as being a gel it's thicker so may not get where you want it! Only products I'd recommend, as IMHO their paint is c**p.
One thing to be aware of is that there are rust REMOVERS, which these are, and also rust CONVERTERS which do not remove it but convert it to iron phosphate, so may not be the sort of product you want.
Hi just come across this thread, I have been told about this, and watched several clips on U-tube, that Molasses, as used in cattle feed as an additive, makes a very good, cheap and 'green' (as in non-polluting) rust remover.
I haven't tried it myself yet as a farming friend is supposed to be getting some for me but it hasn't turned up yet.
It's about £18 for 25 Litres from a farm supplies depot. Mix it at about 9 parts water to 1 part molasses in say, a wheely bin or large tub and immerse the rusty parts for a week or so, remove, brush with a wire brush and hose off, a pressure washer is good. May need further soaking if the rust is really heavy.
I understand it's the sugary acids which gently eat the rust and convert it to sludge. It won't work on oily or greasy parts nor rust under paint.
