MX5 airbag remove interior swop

28 Jun 2014, 9:05am
hi all what will I need to do to remove all the airbags form my mk2 to put this mk1 interior in. I have got the complete car so any bits I should hopefully have can I just pull the air bag light or would that be to much to hope for. The only thing I want to keep in is the mk2 dials as they are electrical for speedo etc. And this may be a stupid question I have removed most of the dash from the mk2 and the airbags will it be safe to start up and move the car or will the ecu think it had a bump and kill the engine or just not start.

Hi Andy

From memory the Airbag control unit is mounted centrally under the top of the dash just above the heater. You will see it once the main dash is removed, careful with your windscreen. With the battery disconnected you can remove the unit and then the airbags. and then the light when it shows. There is no problem with the car starting after that.

I don't think your door panels will fit as the Mk2 doors are a different shape, you may be able to "unwrap" the panels, trim and "re-wrap" if you see what I mean. The seats and other bits should be a straight swap.

Your kit is being collected on Monday

Be careful with airbags! They contain explosives, and certainly for other makes of car it is stated that the airbag must not be disturbed for a certain amount of time (30 mins?) after battery disconnection. They can (I believe) be activated by static electric charge also. Don't want to appear dramatic, but you can't be too careful.

interior mk2 to mk1 sorted

still a bit to do but main thing is its all in heater works same plug no messing hazard switch I fitted were the cigarette lighter used to be . horn needs sorting on the mk1 no air bag so a spring loaded pin touched the back of the steering wheel not on the mk2. all airbags removed and unpluged from srs unit need to work out how to turn light off . I could not work out why the dash was sticky on the top dash turned out it had been painted black shame it was after I had fitted it :frusty: :

I got some new door card covers made for my mx5,£40 each. Black with red diamond stitching . Removed the old cover and stapled the new ones in place, very easy .
