I'm really angry - I was bidding for it on-line and just as I was about to jump the chap from Talacrest's meagre bid, f***ing Bill Gates decided that Windows needed updating on my laptop and the damn thing froze. Bugger.

I looked at buying a couple a few years back -

Y13 OMB (why bomb?) tickled me when it was released as I was an EOD officer, and I thought better of buying V14 PUB (via pub) as I figured I'd get stopped by the law all the time.

A lot of people go about about buying plates the wrong way as using companies such as reg transfers costs you more money. The DVLA owes them 2 plates and if you buy direct from the dvla the price you see is the price you pay including the assignment fee. When you buy them from other companies, they just purchase from the dvla for you add add extra money on top!

Trying to do a 'dateless' search on that site but not having any luck. Is it possible?

The dateless plates all go to auction i think. You can check on the site when the next auction is and download a pdf or excel sheet catalogue of whats coming up.

If you want a 'fake' dateless the NI plates are worth a punt. If you w=are careful with the letters you choose it is not always that obvious at first glance*

Im sure the irish plates are all roughly the same price as what you payed as the DVLA dont sell them so it will just be from the likes of regtransfers and plates4less etc.

Unless the plate spells GAZ or BAZ etc you shouldnt pay more than £100

That's interesting, I guess DVLA try to maximise what they get for each plate. I'm surprised you can't just buy an early suffix plate for a fixed price though, I'll be looking to put a '63 A plate on the SWB when I get round to building the thing -

I know it won't be 100% period correct as the SWB models were built between '59 and '61, but it'll be close enough for me and half the price of a three letter three number plate.

So would a 3 letter, 3 number plate not be better? You may get 1 at the auctions for around the same price as that A reg. look out for ones with U X and Z etc in and they normally cheaper

And remember the price you pay at the dvla auction includes the transfer fee etc

Yes you get 1 year from purchase date i think

No, unfortunately transfer fee, vat and buyers premium are extra. You' might find a 3/3 plate for £350 or so but then add the above to make £540 or more.

I bought a one owner Morris minor in about 1998 that was issued with that number from new. I paid £500 for the car, did some welding for the MOT and used it from time to time. My daughters used sit very low in the back when we went anywhere in it as a family so as not to be seen. When they got older refusing to go out in it. I then reluctantly sold it, retaining the number which has been worn by four or five cars since. I recently put it on retention when we changed my wife's car ready for my build when I can get to it. I don't think I lost much on the Minor so it cost me next to nothing. How lucky was that!!!
