this hot weather I have suffered a slightly higher temp. on my bmw engine, the fan only comes on when I have turned the engine off when back home, if I turn the ignition on again the fan comes on and stays on for a while but it is blowing air out of the front of the radiator. other problem I have in old age is getting to the front sparking plug just not enough room to work, any suggestions?
The air is blowing out the front? You'd need to swap the + and - so it sucks rather than blows - if you have an adjustable thermostat turn it down a little. It's pretty normal for it to turn the fan off again once your underway as the airflow from driving is normally enough to keep it at the right temp. My M20 runs 75c until I stop in traffic then it goes over 80c, the fan then brings it down to 80c where it stays even when the fan turns off.
my fan is in front of the radiator core and when I stand in front of the car it is blowing at me, I just have to find the 2 wires and change them over.
Ok so yours will need to blow into the rad Normally there's only two wires into the fan near the centre where the electric motor is, I fitted a plug on mine about 30cm from the fan, from there it runs to the thermostat control.
Is it definitely blowing towards you. Because it's mounted flat on the face of the rad, even if it's blowing inwards, you'll still get some blow back due to the resistance of the rad itself. I'd confirm visually before making any wiring changes.
My fan is a bit too powerful I think as when it starts up you get a general movement of air anywhere near the front of the car (and struggle to hear the sound of your own voice)
I have fitted the new unit in the hose and about to remove old wiring and wire up, I notice however the original thermostat in the engine ( with 2 tags at the top for wiring) is still wired up , should I remove those 2 wires?
