Z3 Bonnet struts

19 Nov 2015, 2:59pm
I know someone on here was trying to sort out some stronger ones, but I can't remember who.

Did they have any luck or has anyone else got a cunning plan.

Cheers, Bob.

I bought a cheap extending walking stick. Not what you were after but it works and slides down to short enough to store.

If anyone does get strong struts then I am after a couple of sets too

The main trouble is that I need someone inside to pull the lever while I lift the front off the catch as the weight is too much for the struts to do it.

The alternative is to have a "device" that jams the lever inside while you attend to the front catch.
I use a palette knife (it was handy).
WCA has a shaped piece of wood.
Something wedge shaped about 100mm long tapering from 0 to 15mm should do it.

That would do, but I'd like to just get it to work as it should. I may try a new pair of struts as mine are probably weak now.

Something I've been meaning to try is to wind up the bonnet catch pins so that the springs have maximum effect. It's those springs that "pop" the bonnet up. It would put more stress on the cable release but if well greased, that should cope.

Yes, I remember that... I won't bother then!!!

I don't think that stronger gaslift struts will help with popping the bonnet out of the main catches- really need stronger springs around the pins.

Agreed - 2 issues

1 - Bonnet won't pop. Either use a bit of wood to hold the catch open or fit stronger springs on the pins

2 - Bonnet won't stay open. Either use a prop or fit stronger gas struts.
