Cold evening, warm day and smell petrol?

Filled up just before getting home on a relatively cold evening.

Walk past the car in the hot sunshine and could smell petrol.

I thought I left the filler cap off or something but no, it was this small puddle of petrol.

I guess the petrol expanded and the cap let it leak out.

I remember in Uganda we always bought petrol in the evenings and never filled the tank because dad said the petrol was denser in the cool air but always thought it was just an excuse for him to go by cigarettes. Never seen it before in the UK

Either that or something to do with voting in/out of Europe
