It's been one of those days where I look at the car and think what shall I do today!! No... what can I do today as no pedal box so no electrics yet.....no seats so no interior yet! Spent half the day looking at the car wondering what to do when I thought I would have a play with the gear cables!
I had left this job as I thought it would be a pain to set up as the demo car I drove had in my opinion awkward gear selection!
But unless everything changes when I have the clutch in it was very straight forward and I can now select any gear very easily and it feels very slick....
I have not driven a type r before but had been told how short the gear change was.... AND I LIKE IT!!!
I can only presume as with any car the gear change will be even easier with the clutch working even though the engine is off!
Hi John! No at the moment it does not centre but I also will be adding two springs to overcome this.
As for the progress I am quickly approaching an area of which I have no clue at all, the wiring!!!!!
I am pretty sure I wont be bying the blck box but when i have looked at hondata there seems to be too much choice or different kinds and still not sure of the price either!
But what is slowing me down a bit now is also the cost as the other half is starting to moan a bit, Probably the three most expensive items of my build are now needed the seats, the ecu (hondata) and the drive shafts inner and outer! Glad she doesn't read this!
By the way I have decided to get a custom exhaust made when the car is complete as I dont like the marlin exhaust
Craig, I wouldn't be worried about the wiring if I were you, there's nothing overly clever about it I should think - you just need to be methodical (and patient?).
I used one spring for the gearlever, in much the same fashion as most car manufacturers do - it's a circular spring with two arms projecting from it.
Is you shift short left to right? I extended the arm on the end of the rover shift shaft by a cosiderable amount, to ensure the cross gate action was short - fore and aft was never an issue.
I'm determined to get my car running using the oem electical bits and bobs, I just need more time to sit down and crack on with it. I think my first step will be to route the engine loom into the car, as I don't want the ecu in the engine bay.
Cheers,
John.
p.s. Jerry - stop playing with G-laders, and get on with wiring your car up - it'll be inspiring to see a builder with a running K20 engine!
Jerry I have found on the net but cant find price which normally means expensive? But yeah this is what I need me thinks esp if you can set to overfuel between gears yeeeeaaaahh
Jerry can't use your top link tried typing it aswell but that does not seem a bad price! I take it that you dont need the black box either?
When you had it fitted how did they do that? Is your engine running?
Being one of the k series mob, I find all this talk about superchargers and gismos very bewildering, albeit now feeling a bit out of it. I will have my day, will have to find some engine specialist to wave their magic wands over my liitle 1600, and give you type R boys a run for your money.
Anyway, enough of that, Craig its always nice to move on, I remember when I had gears, feels good, well done.
Cheers steve!
I think you will however need a magic wand to keep up with the honda's once we rule the road!
The turbo boys will need to wind their boost up some aswell me thinks.........
John, I bought the gear rod from Rover new and although the rod is the right one it had an extension already in place about 3 inch long which I left on in case I needed it for some strange reason!! I might connect it to that at a later date if needed so thats a bonus!
