Radiator - What size

3 Jan 2007, 7:02pm
Hi All,
Just taken delivery of the rad but the pins on the bottom are 10mm too close together ie 590mm and the centres of the mounts on the chassis are 600mm. Can anyone check their chassis and measure the mount centres for me.

Thanks
Mike R

Mike, 590mm sounds about right (for the bottom). Exactly which radiator did you get?

The radiator on my car is appropriate for a 1.8 vvc (200vi) car circa 1995 ownwards, and fits perfectly. It has a 28 mm inlet and 28 mm outlet.

I'll measure my chassis when I pop out to the garage later.

EDIT:

It's a bit awkward to measure mine, as it's a bit busy around that area now, but the distance between the bottom mount centres appears to be 597mm.

Hi Craig,
Tried the rad both ways up. Rad was from Aaron Radiators ref 2AU143 and is for Rover 200/216. They will swap but now i'm not sure which one I need.

Mike, I can't understand that as I purchased from same link and mine was for 1.8 (non aircon) as described in the link on the top of the ebay page! not a 1.6 that you have received
Have they sent you the wrong one?
The radiator shoud be off a 1.8vvc

Just to let you guys know, the right radiator is going on ebay atm for 38 quid plus p+p. The seller has 5 available..... search for rover 218 radiator....

The radiator you are refering to is the one mike has bought from a link I put up a couple of weeks ago, and also the one I bought months ago (which fits perfectly) but for some reason mike's does not fit

Hi,
As Craig mentions the pins on the bottom of the radiator mentioned are spaced at 590mm yet the mounts on my chassis are 600mm exactly. I've now ordered a rad direct from Marlin so I assume that it will fit.

Mike now that you have ordered from marlin it does not really matter but on the rad I got one set of pins are 590mm and one set was 600mm which I put at the bottom

The radiators do seem to vary a lot - ive looked and found 2 possible options around the right size. In the end i stuck with the one out my donor car and just ground off the marlin mounts and welded on my own.... nice and simple and i know its the right radiator for my engine...

Mike I've got the same problem from AAron rad's. Too close together.:(

They all seem 590 between pins.

How does Marlins one fit?

Hi Steve
The Marlin suppied radiator fits (just) but even so the lugs didn't engage exactly into the sockets welded to the chassis, the pin were hard up against the inside edges of the sockets.

Hi Mike.

Spoke to a guy at adrad where I bought it. They have a 595 mm size rad as a special. Will double check my measurements tonight. Once I have received the rad, will update this post.

OK guys. I got a replacment rad from Adrad. It fits!.

You have to specify RG302 but a special. You have to mention the pin size of 595mm. This is because the same rad comes up in different sizes depending on supplier.

When I bought my radiator, I went into Unipart and asked for a 1.8 vvc radiator, for a car without air conditioning. Job done. I found the correct radiator by scanning through a radiator catalogue online. It's so long ago, I can't remember the URL.

I was lucky first time round. Found a alloy rad on ebay made for a turbo conversion. Right size etc.
