Old Jock - I fully accept your point about a better way to do it.
But Car Photographer has already cut the panels out, so I'm just suggesting he simply refits them, but a bit recessed. As for your build journal, don't worry about timescales, my build is approaching 4 years and that isn't the longest running build thread on here. Quote:
You mean apart from this one, Car Photographer's Fiorano build thread? :icon_wink: All jokes aside, good luck, Paul. :) |
15" Wheels & Lock Limiting
2 Attachment(s)
I have faux Dunlop alloys on my A352, TR6 with 15x6mm holes drilled. The bulkhead in the footwells had to be moved back a good inch and it's still quite tight.
I've limited the lock with a hose clip on the outside ends of each track rod. Agricultural? Yes, it's as was recommended by Tim Dutton in the building instructions for my first kit car, a Phaeton II, in 1982. It works; it's invisible; job done. |
Thanks,
... before we cut them I did drive the car briefly and it felt like you'd have problems doing a 3 point turn if you didn't cut into them a bit. Maybe people just get by with the restricted turning circle |
Timescale wise, I don't know exactly because I'd brought it part done, but I reckon if we had worked on it constantly we could have got it all done in about 2 weeks - obviously practicalities mean that you only get a few bits done at a time so it's been quite slow in my opinion ( about 6 months) not as long as 4 years though - not sure if could wait that long - I'm chomping at the bit after 6 months!!

Heres a little inspiration for you guys
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1977-CORSA...MAAOSw8RJXDT3s Looks nice and the right peson may buy it at that price - ebay might not be the right place to sell it |
Hmm, an inspiration on what not to do - can't stand that wooden dashboard - yak!! ;)

Yeah there's some stuff I like about it - the exhaust system is cool, I wish I could have done that to mine,
I think it's mainly the colour and dash I'm not liking - seen enough of these bright red ones now to be bored of them. ;) |
And if it hadn't of been raining today it might of had an MOT by now!!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us on Monday then. I'm heading north to Dornoch between Inverness and John O'Groats for a few days so I'm hoping for good weather too.:loco:

Got my MOT today!! .....so on monday and tuesday I'll be doing a bit more filling and sanding - then gotta find someone to paint it - really hoping I can get it done before the kit car show in a couple of weeks!! |
Quote:
Any chance of a photo of how it looked going for it's MOT? As I trying to convince myself that an unpainted car can still pass. :icon_wink: Good luck, Paul. :) PS Roadster posted this link on my thread & I guess he could paint your car in a few minutes! https://youtu.be/E3UCEbGZmz0 |
Ha, yeah.
I did take a couple but need to put them on Flickr before I can get them on here. I think it was a pretty 'easy going' place as it was unpainted - they knew it was going to paint next week so 'let me off' luckily :) |
What was it like to drive?
You must have got some heads turning |
Quote:
However even on the tow truck it was turning heads ;) |
Well done with the mot. Was there any comment about the body swap never mind the body colour or lack of it? What are you going to register it as? Triumph special or Fiorano T48? Have you decided on the colour yet?:thumb:
|
Quote:
I'm still thinking about colours, rosso Barchetta or maybe nissan clear red are both pretty close. as regards naming it - I don't know if I stand an easier chance as a 'triumph special' than a 'Fiorano' - basically I'm happy with whatever they will ask less questions about - not sure if the name will make any difference to that though? |
ok some more pics - firstly another 'catering themed' hack
- used a fish fryer tool to make a grille for my bonnet bulge ;) https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1602/...1ef0f5da_z.jpgDSC_0109 by paul ward, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1546/...ab11025a_z.jpgDSC_0107_1 by paul ward, on Flickr |
next - an idea for my grille - made out of balsa wood as a test ..... I seem to have got the wheel tracking / alignment sorted now too ;)

and finally - the last thing holding me up before it can go to paint - the side holes we cut to allow for a full wheel lock on the steering have been shaped and are being filled - hopefully when painted they will look ok

Great use of the fish frier.
I'm sure the "hollows" in the bodywork will look like a standard feature/pit lane modification when painted. Good luck, Paul. :) |
Cheers
|
so it looks like I'm going to have to brush paint the car if I'm going to get it finished before the kit car show - wish me luck!!
|
I'll certainly wish you luck with your attempt to hand paint the car.
Given that is my plan too, I'll be very interested in seeing how you get on. Good luck, Paul. :) |

yeah, I spent most of yesterday visiting almost every body shop in Birmingham, they all said they were too busy to do it in that short amount of time. so I figured I'd try this way. So today we are taking all the bits off the car and possibly going to do an etch primer layer from spray cans, then friday maybe we will paint the high build brush primer on, fingers crossed!! |
Did you have a go at brush painting your car and was it successful? I've been trying to get a reasonable quote for shot blasting the chassis. So far the cheapest quote is £300, is this normal or are they taking the Mick? For that price I have to completely degrease the chassis prior to the work being done which will probably take me longer to do than it will take for the shot-blasting!:mad2:
|
I honestly don't know about the shot blasting prices. I'd say maybe just contact a few places and get other quotes too.
yes I did get the paint on - I made a few fatal errors, which have resulted in the paint finish looking shit close up. I brush painted the bonnet and boot which resulted in the paint being too thick and causing runs - then I rollered the body which although it had less runs - didn't cover the primer properly (due to my lack of time and prep), so that has an uneven surface too. - if the paint hardens enough to sand it in a week or so I think it may still be retrievable - however if it always remains this tacky - it's going to be a nightmare .... I'll have to wait and see. - so if I do make it to stoneleigh I reckon I need a rope barrier so no one can get too close ;) The car looks great from a distance though - I'll upload a pic from home later if I get a chance. |
Did you use cellulose paint? I think the advice is that it takes a couple of weeks to dry fully. I hope it doesn't rain at Stoneleigh! A photo would be good to see the colour. I'm still thinking of Jaguar Regency Red for mine.
|
Really not sure if it was cellulose - it was brushing paint, from Jawel paints but not sure what it was made of.
Ok here we go .... https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1441/...5965120b_z.jpgDSC_0156 by paul ward, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1476/...108fa5c8_z.jpgIMG_20160427_183057 by paul ward, on Flickr still got to do the grille properly (this one's only a balsa wood mockup), and do some stuff with the interior. also I need to flat and repaint if the paint goes dry at some point. |
Sorry to hear you had problems while painting, but it is a great colour and the car looks great.
Good luck, Paul. :) |
It looks really good in that colour, very like the original Ferrari T166 the kit is loosely based on. Well done! :first:
|
Finishing Touch?
I have these on the bonnet sides of my Mk1 Marlin Roadster, AKA 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C, which is finished in very similar Rolls Royce Tudor Red cellulose, albeit roughly applied with a 4" brush.
Regards, Mick |
Cheers guys,
The paint close up really does look pretty bad - so go easy on me if I do make it to Stoneleigh ;) I'm not sure about finishing bits - I have a bonnet badge, chrome prancing horse and side stickers but tried them all today and I only really thought the bonnet badge looked any good, so not sure yet, maybe I'll bring them to Stoneleigh to get some opinions. |
Ive used the paint from Jawel - its a synthetic paint for commercial and plant and can be applied by brush or roller.
It does take a while to fully cure but if you have enough paint on it will flat and polish the runs out. I like that this paint has a gloss but not the deep 2k gloss that looks wrong on a classic car It looks good in the pics, I think the darker red suits much better than the brighter red that most are seen in I look forward to finding you at Stoneleigh. Don't be disheartened, the only people that may comment are the dreamers that don't build cars. Like everything we do here, its a learning curve and the fix isn't normally as hard as it appears |
Quote:
The original T166 only had a bonnet badge on the road car. The comments from Roadster are absolutely spot-on. Lots of rubbing down in between coats will see you right and as he says, the finish will be more appropriate than the two-pack bling finish. Keep up the good work.:hail: |
Cheers guys :)
|
I think it looks great and I have to agree the colour is spot on for the period look. Will hunt you down if you are there on Sunday to admire accordingly, a great effort!
|
BAD NEWS... I'm afraid it looks like I might not make it now - on the drive back from the workshop the back wheelarch support bracket broke it's weld - I don't have welding equipment or the knowledge needed - so unless I can think of something it looks like I may be grounded!
Not happy :( |
