The only way I can get a Sammio registered in Belgium is to have the documents changed in the UK, which means, if I want to do the full build myself, I have to go to the UK to pick up the body, get a donor car with UK paperwork, bring it all to my workshop in Belgium, convert the car, and ship it back to the UK for the necessary inspection and change of identity, after which I can finally officially import it into Belgium.

At that point, I can use it under a special registration for classic cars with limits on where and when I can drive to...

So yes, I've been jealous of the UK kit car set up ever since I was old enough to be interested in cars...

Hi not sure on all the details on the this rear end, but the spec states,
Rear Axle: second generation Mazda RX7 differential housing with first generation limited slip third member and 3.909:1 gear ratio.

Front Susp.: stock Triumph.

Rear Susp.: custom coilover IRS with unequal length control arms and custom antisway bar (designed by owner.)

It's on a web site called "British V8's"

So let me get this straight.

If our friends across the channel need us to provide a build service and correctly register kit cars for them to buy and import...

Without stating the bl**ding obvious: - shouldn't we all be using left hand drive Heralds if we are to help to relieve them of their remaining euro's?

Where are Gary's left hand drive body's being built then, is it here or abroad?

I see where you are going with that Paul , correctly registered cars will always sell well in Europe.

66 lives in Stuttgart now ....

There is also a group of European buyers who are happy to have RHD as well because many early cars were RHD and it also is more obviously an import ...

I'd wondered about that with the Lancia D24's being right hand drive. I guessed (probably wrongly) that it was something to do with weight distribution when circuit racing.

I seem to remember that the Japanese went mad for the last batch of pre BMW Mini Coopers, but wanted them in LHD for the extra kudos of having an obvious import even though they drive on the left like us.

To quote something we used to tell the American forces personnel when they complained about having to adapt to driving on the left when they were posted over here:

Hi, I'm a bit late in with some comments but I had some of the same problems getting in contact with them re registering the Shelsley (with an SVA),

My best advice is to take a morning off work, go down to you local DVLA office IN PERSON, first thing, with build photos (including chassis and engine numbers) , receipts and V5, they have the form behind the counter, fill that in saying you want to keep the reg, have your major component points adding up correctly etc etc and tell them your build falls into X category and thus you request an inspection at that office and book a time.

it is the only way to get it done and acheive the outcome YOU want

New V5 just landed on the doormat - and it no longer says Triumph Herald but SAMMIO SPYDER and as it was a 69 Herald it is an Historic vehicle. Gary had it inspected in Poole after he fitted the body, so that is the way to go - hassle free cheers Gary. Better get on with it now.....

For anyone considering the option of us fitting the body and getting the car inspected , it is worth knowing that I don't charge for the Inspection or my time involved ....I like to know this part is sorted out for the builder and happily organise it free of charge....

Similarly , anyone returning to us for an inspection at Bournemouth - no charge !!

I've had a few people looking to buy my Spitfire body shell.
( As I'm currently advertising other parts on Ebay )

Therefore my re-body inspection question is this...

If the only Spitfire VIN plate is the one on the body shell, what chassis number is checked at the inspection?

Do you need to remove and retain the VIN plate separately?
( The previous owner had already done this whilst carrying out repairs )

Or does the 'body' VIN plate need to be attached to the Spitfire frame instead?

Hopefully adding this question to this existing thread will help others.

Are they expecting to simply swap their own VIN from a rusty shell to the nice one I sell them?

Paul, you HAVE to remove the VIN Plate from the body, then re-attach it to the Sammio body somewhere.

It is the ONLY place the "chassis" number is visible, so you must keep it!
It is acceptable to buy a new plate and stamp your numbers on it, but I would keep the old old one anyway and don't let it go with the body!

As he said......PUT IT BACK IN THE SAME PLACE AS WELL ....Nearside bulkhead edge..they will expect to see it there and although it can be moved , its one less question to have to answer at inspection if its where they would usually see it.....
