Help getting re-started

I have recently collected a part 1 and part 2 ‘almost assembled kit’ for completion. It’s not a rolling chassis yet but it should be after a visit to the scrappy to collect a set of drum based stub axels and a set of wheel bearings from the factors. Not sure what bearings yet? I should achieve this over the Xmas holiday and be able to move the chassis on to the drive to work on it when the sun shines over the break. (Should that be IF) One of the problems I have is that I do not have the CD Build Manual as supplied with the original kit. I am told that it’s not worth a great deal in the grand scheme of things and life goes on without it. However, I need to see it to ensure I am not missing cute or subtle bits of the build, especially as I did not build the kit to its current state! I am told the CD illustrates the build sequence for example? At this moment I don’t know what’s ‘not’ been done, if you get my drift. I also like to be fully prepared before I start or it all gets messy and things have to be re-worked time and again to complete simple jobs and I want to avoid that. I have already received support from a couple of local (South West) builders with access to the full WKC series of articles, which are; I am told more comprehensive than the CD manual. In the lead up to Xmas I will be cleaning and painting all the iron bits from the scrappy and the new iron bits on the kit, or they all go rusty long term. Need to ‘spanner check’ all the fitted bits and then ….. I am off building with a K-series VVC donor. You opinions and options are welcome. As far as I'm aware there are 2 "manuals" in circulation. I've got both, and suspect the one John has offered to send is the earlier one.

350 files and 37 folder later I have it all (excluding the Honda bits) if you want to reclaim your Web space..... Thank you.
The process is rough but it gives me a check sheet to tick off and the pictures although there is many repeats of some, generally appear good quality. If it don't rain :rain: in Somerset this weekend I will be suffering the cold and scratching over the completed work to see where to start. Your help has been invaluable I will post progress as the opportunity arises. Is the window screen from a Lotus Elise by the way? Watching eBay for 206 lights. JohnC |
Yes - Elise screen. You'll find they come with or without a sun strip.
Be CAREFUL with the dimensions shown in Marlin's pictures - for instance the vent holes in the dash are not correct from what I understand (I did mine differently). Don't assume the dims will work. |

I never really considired the doored version, did not like the lines.
By chance what fell into my hands was non doored. May have to join a Yoga class to enable easy entry and exit! (do you realise there is no Smilly for 'Old and Grey'!) |

As already said welcome aboard, nice to have a fellow builder especially a K series chap none of these japo or mighty turbo lovers. (no doubt will live to regret that jibe), anyway if I can be of any assistance I will be happy to offer my thoughts. I personally found the manaul most useful for the wiring inforamton coupled with a haynes manual it worked well, as far as the rest of it, I tended to go my own way. Regards Steve |

I think I would want to do it all myself. Mind you have bypassed my current problem. Long wait at the factory for the kit, Ordered just after the Donny show and I think it will probably a few more months yet. David. |
Okay there seems to be a division of patronage developing, them’s with Honda power and the purists with K-Series supremacy (suitably and extensively modified to avoid the manufacturing errors).
Turbos? I haven’t got the time to wait for the boost to build in these over complicated technology driven pussy wagons, impressing the girlies with spinning rubber as the traction is not available, I like grunt reliable power that goes on to the moon.. ..and before you get all protective I am on the insurance of a 300+ BHP Scooby and the Murtaya was a strong option for this build and a serious option for the next. I think I’m getting the picture. Completing a ‘started kit’ is a duty I feel I have, the lines of the 5exi just need to be displayed on the road. I may well strip off and refit, to be sure some of the mechanical parts but to be serious the build is not complicated, compact but not complicated. It also whacked a shed-load of the new kit price it was just a matter of waiting for the right opportunity. The devil is in the finishing detail, its ok for these Racers that don’t need to make the car liveable and jump through complex hoops like SVA and registration to be able to enjoy the driving experence. I like my cars to be finished and presented to the highest standard I can achieve. I have researched this build for 18 month ever since I saw the WKC built Yellow 5exi at TrackDevelopments in Chippenham. It was a moment a bit like Toad of Toad Hall in Wind of the Willows, for those of you that know the story. I just hope I don’t get into the same trouble as Toad with my car…. I said at the time to Dave Gallop and my son ‘I got to build one of theses….’ as I sat in it making brumming noises. :peace: Look me in the keyboard and tell me you have NOT been there... |
