:icon_wink: Anyway, back on topic... Really looking forward to seeing the car in paint now. |
Ah, yes, I forget about the 'Pandora' thing.
Oddly, Pandora's box was actually a Hewland Mk5. Who knew! LOL |

Next project now decided upon, it's just a question of convincing SWMBO we need a SWB (she's kind of agreed that I can build one in two years time, she just doesn't know it yet...) -

It was nice to meet Chris and Dan (and IanA), and well done for getting it ready for the show. |
Very glad to see the stand was so busy today & thanks to Dan for showing me round. My 15 year old son has already started dropping hints about first cars....well, there are a few smaller engined Z3's around!
|
It was worth the 400 mile round trip to see the SWB.
The car looks great and Chris and Dan were very busy on Sunday http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...3E7821C0E3.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...A1F899EFA4.jpg Looks good from all angles http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...5A9642447D.jpg A caption competition of Chris and Geoff in discussion. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...3ABC6CCF68.jpg |
Chris & Dan - Many congratulations on getting the car looking so good for the show.
Hope you get the chance for a short break before the orders start flooding in. Good luck, Paul. :) |
That looks amazing!

Geoff , Chris i am sure i said a convertible!
Chris , i`ll get my jig saw . |
Chris: er... I appear to have my finger stuck . Could you help .
Geoff: I've farted if i wave my hands around it should disperse the smell. I'll leave that one with you Chris. |
Geoff:" ...and his beard was this long you say....?"
Chris:"..yeah, and he got it stuck in the window runner right here..." |
Chris: This is the best way to feel if the panels flat...
Geoff: Put it away, Chris... |
Ha ha :icon_razz: My double chin and bold patch are no laughing matter!:pound:
Got the exhaust storted this afternoon. Only 3 days too late! http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/...psed9d2627.jpg |

Forgot to post this picture up before.
1pm on Friday... http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/...psf760978f.jpg We left for Donington at 4.30, but due to badly balanced wheels limiting speed and a puncture we didn't reach our hotel in Derby until 10.59pm, just in time for last orders, luckily. |

Chris, just a thought on the window...
I know the split side window is retro, but its also difficult to make, difficult to seal, and barely opens... How about if you had a front quaterlight, and then a one piece window, then the front and rear of the glass / lexan would be parralell with each other....(if you get me so far..) then the window could go all the way down. But instead of any complicated winding mechanism, have a third runner in the centre, and a big knurled knob. Slacken the knob, pull the window up / down / anywhere, tighten the knob. I'm sure its been done before, but its a dead simple way of having an opening window... And then of course you could have the top of the frame any shape you want.....Mmmm...a nice curve......! I hope you follow my crazy explanation, it works in my head.... Lovely car though.:whoo: |

http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1d223e54.jpg There was also a very similar painted 250 SWB on the "I am Steve McQueen" documentary. The car should fit right in at Goodwood. Good luck, Paul. :) |
saw this today driving through Poole , looked pretty impressive .
I think People are getting carried away with the desire to 'replicate' rather than 'tributize' .Yes the window lines different , but the cockpit position and length of bonnet is too.None of this detracts from the fact its a very good looking 'tribute' to the car it aspires to be .The Z3 base is a perfect choice for this car , it deserves to sell well.. |

For my part, I'd like to see the side window line changed slightly if that's practicable. It's one of the defining features that makes the original so striking and that little detail would make the car as it stands look perfect to me. I appreciate that almost none of the Tribute swb dimensions actually match an original (but do two originals match each other?), and it looks none the worse for that, so it's the little details that trick the eye into seeing it as being more than the sum of its parts. Having said all that, if the side windows remain as they are I'll still be building one. :) |
I agree with Mr Towed on the side window issue, that very slight " curve" on the top edge would make an absolute world of difference,
but as Mr T said, it may be too difficult to alter at this stage. |
T, you'll have to do a 'Sammio' on it... cut it up.
|
Is that the back end of Scotties XKSS in the picture?

From talking to Chris and Dan at Donington it won't be their panels that need cutting up, but the donor Z3 needs some, ahem, adjustment with a lump hammer to squeeze it into its party frock. Still can't decide what colour it'll be when I finally get the funds together though... http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/...psfb479aaa.jpg |

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Geoff.
With the Spyder I just set out with an image in my head of how I wanted it to look and that's pretty much how it turned out. For my next project (don't hold your breath, it's two years away from me being able to afford a second toy) I'll be going for the stripped out race car look inside and out. As it'll be my daily driver engine size won't matter to me, even a 1.8 or 16v 1.9 will be fine, but I do want a/c for trips to sunnier climes and my ebay watch list currently runneth over with potential donors. Looking forward to seeing your car come together over the next few months, it'd be nice to meet up for a photo shoot and a chat once it's on the road. You might want to resin polish your car beforehand though so my drool doesn't tarnish the paintwork. :) |
