Insurance 2013
 

Did a quick trawl through the forum on this topic and everything was circa 2005-2008.

Whilst at Stoneleigh I visited the Adrian Flux stand and got an insurance quote. I thought it would make sense to shop around, so tried a few online quotes but none of them recognised the 5Exi model. Just started to ring some today, and started with Footman James.

The guy on the phone told me that they don't insure home-built kitcars - only factory built ones!

Anyone else come across this?

Anyone using other companies other than AF?

First I've heard of footman James saying that! I was insured with them at the beginning during and after build. I'm with Adrian Flux at the moment.

Steve found some others with good prices. I can't remember there names. But I'll ask him to post here.

I've just insured my Sportster for a year. It's insured on the chassis number and will cover me for the drive to the IVA at the end of May. I went with 2gether who gave me the best quote by far. And excellent service as well.......................

They're worth a try.

When I had my exi I used Footman, no issues what so ever.

I would though suggest you try, Frank Pickles, Graham Sykes, and Gott and Wynn, and play them off against one another my first quote was £250 odd, I am down to about £150.

My car is insured with Frank Pickles. Last premium paid was about £125.

Footman James wouldn't insure my car once they learnt I use it on track, even though I didn't want them to cover that risk.

I went with Adrian Flux, as they seemed to be reasonably priced and seemed to understand kit cars, although they did ask me if it had been modified in anyway !

One strange thing was when I asked to have my wife added, they said it would reduce the premium by £25. And then of course I asked if adding any more drivers would reduce it further but unfortunately not.

Its always a good thing to have your wife on the insurance,not to say she will ever drive it(Not my car Anyway!! :) ), but shows your are responsible and have responsibilites

I agree with you on that. I think the only scenario I can see where my wife would be driving would involve a sunny day, a country pub a some good beer!

But at least it saved me £25 on the insurance, something to bare in mind when trying to reduce the premiums - even if you do not have a wife perhaps you could borrow one for this purpose :ballchain:

Borrowing someone else's wife for insurance purposes? I can see it now:

(as bedroom door bursts open): "No, no wait, calm down - it's not what it looks like - I'm just trying to lower my insurance premium"

Seriously though, thanks for the advice. The problem appears to be that I'm trying to get my dad on the policy as a named driver (after all, he has helped build the car). Some companies won't insure anyone over 69 for a kit car (so all those 5Exi builders who are taking longer than I did better get a move on!)
