Joe's Alterative MX250 Hardtop

We had a visit from a customer called Joe who wanted an MX250C, but after seeing the "Alternative" MX250 front end he left with another idea:

This is the first draft for his car, which has already developed further still. This is going to be a very interesting build.........

seanick 5th March 2013 20:52

Oooh I do like that. Of course the great thing about my flip front is I can change it in a blink....

I do like your house Chris. Plenty of room on the drive for cars.

redratbike 5th March 2013 21:17

I like the 3/4 windows behind the driver.....def. adds to the car

The 3/4 window, wing vents and the grille opening are the only changes to the original MX250 kit, but it makes a whole new look.

kenny-d 5th March 2013 21:29

like the look of the 3/4 windows, very interesting!

Not my house, sorry to say, but my wife does work there, it's one of those Spa thingys :bathbaby:

Hammy 5th March 2013 22:09

Yeah yeah, you can't fool me!

AndyP57 5th March 2013 22:40

That does look very nice Chris. Moves away from replica land and becomes a great looking car in its own right. I'm looking forward to seeing this one in the flesh.

froggyman 6th March 2013 01:42

What a stunner. Looks beautiful.
Now that is what I call a 'teaser.'

The grille and wing vents are very Aston Martin though http://kamui57.toile-libre.org/smile...re_capello.jpg

jmc14 6th March 2013 13:35

I like it but if it were me I would not do the Aston Martin grill. It looks too big to me. Plus, everyone will think that you are trying to replicate. I would make a nice oval using the width of the narrower section and using the existing bottom of the grill opening and eliminate the wings. Then it would move further from a replica. Just my 2 cents which means pretty much nothing!

Like the side windows!

I wish I had your photoshop skills. Outstanding.

WorldClassAccident 6th March 2013 19:51

Now what would fit a nice oval grill?

Bongo 8th March 2013 13:36

Lookin' sweet!

That's something similar to what I'll be after when I finally make space to start my build.

The alternative, AM-inspired front end looks great but I'd still like to keep the ragtop. An MX250c AM, if you will.

You couldn't knock out a mock-up pic of that when you've got 5 minutes could you Chris?

I know I'm putting the cart before the horse at times but I'm already running through paint jobs in my head - I fancy a darker metallic grey / silver but then I love the colour of the DB5 in Goldfinger - could set it off a treat!

Anyway, back to looking at sheds so I can clear my garage. :bolt:

seanick 8th March 2013 20:19

My Photoshop skills are lacking.......but if I was to have a front like this, I would massage it in a bit like this.....to my liking :-

This project has been progressing very slowly in the background at the workshop. It is something that will get finished (it's too good an idea not to), but due to the subsidised price of the project, other things like kit sales etc need to come first, but it will get done one day Joe

Joe's base car arrived at the workshop on the day we moved in

An MX250 hardtop kit with the "alternative" front end was hung on our workshop car and cut'n' shut

Chris, I wish that I could cut and paste with you. Your very good at it!

DSG4ME 1st November 2013 07:33

Your project seems to be progressing nicely, and probably it will cost 1/20th of what an Aston DB4 Zagato replica (DB7 based) built by Evante would probably cost.

Check it out at. http://www.evanta.co.uk/DB4-Zagato.htm#all

Best of luck with the project. 😊

Danny_HUFC 1st November 2013 07:45

Love the look of the back, what car is the roof taken from and how are you going to get round the rear side windows?

and will there be a convertible version?....

http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/...psba6d6d9a.jpg

Interesting to follow this build

zagmad 1st November 2013 17:52

I think the evanta back end is too long. But as its based on a db7. Room for a tent and a squishy weekend bag and a bike and set of cutlery and a hamper and a cudly toy, wobbly man.

Boogle 3rd November 2013 09:26

Hi, I found this site through intrest in the MX250. And this alternate version might look even better, I was wondering if these body panels would someday become available to self builders?

zagmad 6th November 2013 16:40

You never know. Depends if lots if people like the end result that's why im going down their to see how its developing, end of the month. See if can give him some help. I find its best to stand back from a distance to see overall design so all the lines connect and flow. Don't think Chris has got time for standing for too long.

zagmad 6th November 2013 17:04

if you've got deep enough pockets and time. Fibreglass can be shaped and molded to lots of shapes. Eg bonnet vents, wing vents wide arches ,narrower arches . Spot lights. Styles can be classic or concept or a mixture. Slats or mesh on the grill. Skys the limits with chris's skills :-)

zagmad 7th November 2013 16:19

  smilies such fun to pass the time. Don't know how to post pics so I'll put this in words. Am at a point where lights and door handles, chrome bits and bobs will be going on. Well which ones to go on kind of stage. Any thoughts on the new mini door handles instead of classic mini handles. Tailights wether to use one with break lights and indicator eg lotus exige led tailights or old school or as Chris says, period lights like on the 250 kit.

Tribute Automotive 7th November 2013 20:10

It's period all the way for me Joe....

http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/...psd82abbdf.jpg

zagmad 7th November 2013 20:36

What's your thoughts on bonnet bulges and vents. Id fit 16 wire wheels but theyd be gone by the the next day where i live. I'm tempted to go concept style to allow for my wheels. Which just means lights and chrome work but different wheels. Only thing is id prob tweek it later to my style. So gonna go with period tailights to go with the headlights. Just not sure bout door handles coz their seems to be two types. Barchetta on some and others with seperate and release button.

zagmad 7th November 2013 20:37

Oops 16inch wheels that is.

zagmad 7th November 2013 20:44

Doh! Barchetta style . Then some have a handle and a seperate button release that seem to be sunk into the door.

Tribute Automotive 7th November 2013 20:45

I like the bonnet vent shown above rather than the 3x bulges. Don't mind either door handle idea, just so long as we lose the MX5 handles.

zagmad 7th November 2013 21:25

:icon_lol: Any idea where to get the side repeaters. Look from a motorbike. Short and skinny.

Scottie22 8th November 2013 10:52

Not sure what the top car is, but it looks very similar to
the Jaguar XK 180. All you twin hump freaks take note!

zagmad 8th November 2013 16:59

Gigi concept car looks good as a contemporary version of the car . Any views on that?

zagmad 11th November 2013 19:14

:peace: Any new pics Chris . Last time i saw it the front was looking great.

zagmad 12th November 2013 20:47

:playball: Once upon a time . In a land far far away. Their lived .

zagmad 17th November 2013 17:28

:noidea: Thanks for the updated pics. Kits looking great.

Tribute Automotive 22nd November 2013 19:43

Good to see you on Thursday Joe.

Loads of good decisions made and lots more to think about.

WorldClassAccident 23rd November 2013 07:59

I have a spare set of Aston Martin DB4 wire wheels.

They are 15" with the 42mm hub. I had some hub adaptors made for my Z3 by Orson (http://www.orson-equipment.co.uk/). It might be worth contacting Dave Woods at Orson to see if they have any ideas about their proofing them. They do loads of different hubs.

Down&Out 23rd November 2013 08:26

Oh this is going to be superb! im looking forward to seeing the finished plug.

Ozzie Dave 24th November 2013 23:41

I must also add that this looks great, especially without the roof! love the idea and concept, hope it comes off and sells.

zagmad 30th November 2013 21:29

:bounce: Saw kit the other day looks awesome. Lights will be almost like the original with the lense. Grills taking shape nicely. Dropped stainless grill and other wheels . Contemplating wether to go period or concept lighting as found alternative headlights and tailights but till back end is fixed wont know if they will work together. Took a while but i think I've found the right combo.
