I'm all in!
Well, I did it! I put a deposit down for TWO kits. A D-Type body for a Factory Five Roadster frame I'm rebuilding and a MX250 convertible kit for my '97 Miata. This should be great fun. Best part, my wife is totally on board.
Chris said, production in two weeks! Pat :icon_cool: |
Welcome
Another mx250 convertible, nice. I'm in the middle of building my second. One on a mk1 and this one on a mk2 |
Never as simple as it seems
Good man

1. You haven't heard the whispered under the breath "But....." 2. This harmonious state of repair will not last long. Good luck anyway. |

As I explain to my long suffering wife - it is better that my hobbies have tyres, not tits!

Welcome upstatecobraguy! Any questions about the mx250 convertible kit, I'm happy to help, having just finished mine (sorta)

Pat - Congratulations on your double order.
I hope you will post a build thread on here so we can follow your progress. I might even try to arrange a visit next time I'm in the States. ( See details on your "Intro" thread. ) Good luck, Paul. :) |
costs/company who arranges shipping ect I would imagine would be of great interest of prospect builders from across the pond.

D-type
UpstateCobraGuy,
What a great idea, to put one of these bodies on a FF5 chassis, several years back I put a different Cobra body on a FF5 chassis, I'm doing it again, now. I think I'm only a week or two behind you in ordering an XKSS to place on a Bennett Cobra chassis. Bennett built purely racing Cobras, he was a one man band, awesome chassis. So, on another thread you were searching for shipping to USA, any luck? Wayne |
Thanks! I was planning on finding a 289 body for it, but when I saw the D type a light bulb went off...
|
Hi there 427and all the esses!
Am interested in your XKSS build as I built one out of one of Chris's A352's last year. So what exactly did you order? Mine was made from a long-nose D type body, rather than the usual short nose which ( as far as I know) all XKSS's were made from) I had to do quite a lot of heavy modding to get what I wanted out of the body-shell, including making my own front screen surround, bumpers, seats complete exhaust, side windows etc Here is a pic of the result: Hope it inspires you!! |
Scottie,
That looks great! I'm planning on building a 1/2 D-Type, 1/2 XK SS, taking elements from each and using what I like. I kind of did that my Cobra build by using what I liked between the Street and S/C models. Your red interior looks outstanding! I'm sure I will be asking for help with the small bits you included in you build. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...ps0h6pglbo.jpg Thanks, Pat |
Wow Pat, that snake looks really nice! You should make a good job of the D.
It took me two years to build my XKSS, and somewhere in the dark depths of this site there are all the pictures on how I did just about everything. I will see if I can find the thread and post something so it puts it back on the front page if you are interested. My windscreen on the XKSS is actually the rear screen from a 1950's Morris Minor car. It was the only glass I could find that was narrow enough to fit, and look right on the car. It took one hell of a lot of welding, double skinning etc to get it all fitted/braced and so on, but it was worth it in the end. |

It arrived!
After about 4 months, one very large crate has appeared in my garage. Seriously it was huge!

Cobra in the corner.... http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pszyvbs8dy.jpg MX-250 http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psodxs3pvk.jpg With great nervousness, I put the nose on my Factory Five Racing Mark II Cobra frame. IMHO, it passes the eye test with flying colors. A whole boat load of work ahead of me but that's why I went for it. Pat :peace: |
Excellent Pat!
Congrats on step one.. |
Pat – Glad to see your kits arrived safe and sound.
I’m really looking forward to seeing your builds progress. Good luck, Paul. :) |
Quick update...
Working to fit the D-type to the FFR Cobra frame. Let's just say, my Sawzall has gotten a workout. Low and behold, FF Cobras are much taller than D-types. I've cut away much of the 1" square tubing and the entire trunk (boot) structure. The gas tank will be relocated to over the rear end. Here's a few photos of my progress. 👍🏻

Build on hold until the kitchen is done...
Sorry guys,
I'm in the closing stages of a kitchen/bath/laundry room remodel. I've been hard at work keeping the wife happy.:nono: I did rebuild the Ford 8.8 rear end with 4.10 gears, so that will be ready to go when the time presents! I'll get back at it in a little while and keep everyone updated. Pat |
Please do, looking forward to see how this progresses, plus have got garage envy!

She’s a runner!
Sorry for the delayed updates on this build. I’m a big fan of posting photo on my build and since photobucket decided to lock down my pictures, it’s been to much of a pita to post properly. I’m try this for the first time so, bear with me...

The best way to test out the major components and a absolute blast to drive! https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared...XFRKNC2ztWf66I Running great! |
Update...
Sort of a lame excuse of an update, but I have been working on it.

You could try the Album option on here:
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/forum/album.php I use Google, but that became a pain and requires me to use an old iMac to create the links needed on the forum. Cheers, Paul. :) |
Image Hosting
Flickr. Works for me.

Long overdue update...
I purchased a 4 post lift to add parking space and make my build easier. The Cobra will be stored off site and I'll be able to move the "D" up and down to access the build better.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1738 Side view: Yes, I'm a HUGE fan of side pipes! Ford 8.8 rear end w/ 4.10 gears. The rear suspension is Factory Five Racing's 3 link http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1739 Better view of the rear end... http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1741 Here's the heart of the build, Ford Small Block 302 from an '00 Ford Explorer SUV. This is what will drive the Jaguar purist crazy. Simple cam change and valve spring upgrade will net 300+ HP. Personally, let 'em pound salt, I have less the 1K in the entire drivetrain. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1729 Dash board: Built from a combination of a bunch of different gauge types. Some Alfa Romeo Jeager, ELING speedo & tach http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1735 I'll post more as time allows, I need to finish the final wiring and get the hood hinges figures out.
