Why not use dzus fasteners and make it removable..
Unless I misunderstood your post. |
Molleur
Thanks for the reply yes it will be removable i'll be using some sort of clips. cheers Deggsy |
Deggsy - Your aluminium half tonneau cover will look spectacular.
Good luck with all the drilling and riveting required. Cheers, Paul. :) |
hard cover
Almost finished now all the supports and alloy sheet have been made and drilled fixed with over 200 pop rivets.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1422 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1417 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1416 The panel was then etch primed and all the rivets heads filled and flatted to look like old fashion rivets rather than the pop ones. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1415 Etch primed again then the same process for the end fillets. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1413 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1412 The fillets will be removable, ready for painting now I have left six rivets out into which i will fit some m4x30mm button head bolts which will have tabs on them to hold the panel in place if that isn't secure enough then i'll fit some boot locks:mmph: Cheers back soon. |
fantastic job, well done!
|
You filled the heads of 200 rivets!
Rather you than me, but great job  Good luck, Paul. :) |
Yep took me the best part of two days and there are still a few that have to be re done. doh!
|
Not a lot been happening lately but I finally took the plunge and bought a compressor the car is now up on ramps ready to be flatted back for primer. I have also been cleaning the garage ready for painting the car
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1439 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1438 I am hoping to start spraying it next week if all goes well  I will post photos when done. |
Best of luck with the paint, make the most of the warm dry weather, its about as good as it gets for painting at home !
|
Paint
The car has now had two coats of high build primer which showed up a few flaws which we missed these have now been stoppered flatted and re sprayed.
I am hoping for nicer weather tomorrow to apply the top coats :humble: http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1447 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1446 |
Looking good. Am I going mad tho... those pics look like they are the same pics from the 24th?
|
Hmmm my apologies you are right i don't know what happened there the photos I took seem to have vanished into the either.
Never mind I will post some of the finished paint job in the next day or two. |
Hope the painting is going well and I'm looking forward to seeing it in colour.
Good luck, Paul. :) |
painting finished
Finished the painting late last night there are a few small runs but nothing major I will leave it a few days to fully cure then start on butting it all back together. :eusa_dance:
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1459 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1458 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1455 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1452 I do have a small confession to make I didn't spray it myself my nephew volunteered and as he has sprayed a half dozen or so in the past who was I to refuse his kind offer. :eusa_shhh: |
And thanks for the encouragement guys.
|
looking good!
|
I have started putting it all back together some of the lights are in place.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1465 For some reason the doors and boot lid don't line up any more incredible the difference a coat or two of paint makes! also the boot lid support bracket which is/was bonded on decided to un-bond itself twice :mad2: I am looking into other bonding materials as I don't want to drill a hole in the lid and bolt it in place. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1468 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1467 It should look a bit like this when they are fitted properly :peep: |
Very nice!
Make sure to remove ALL of the old bonding material. I have been using UPOL Tiger Seal with success. |
That looks fantastic!
Hats off to you sir! |
Deggsy - Your car is coming together very nicely.
I am sure it will look even better when you get the chance to roll it out into natural light. Good luck with getting everything to fit as nicely as you would like. Although, I recently posted these photos on the Miglia forum…. As the key thing to remember is that back in the ‘50s, these cars were built like this… https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...3e11fc5d26.jpg Not like this. :icon_twisted: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/V0...6=w670-h416-no So if you do end up with some odd panel gaps, just say the body shell for the car was hand built. :D Cheers, Paul. :) |
I finally managed to get the boot support bracket to bond using a two pack epoxy, I didn't have any tiger seal left doh.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1488 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1487 The windscreen is in place but not fixed yet I have made some brackets, bent twisted and drilled. Rubbish photo sorry. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1485 I actually made three of these but drilled the first one before bending and twisting needless to say the holes didn't line up school boy error. As they will be in full view I had better make a good job of painting them. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1486 |
I managed to get a bit more done this week. The chrome covers for the wiper boxes didn't fit do made up some new ones from ally and inner tube rubber for the seals.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1542 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1545 looking much better now. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1540 the washer jets have also been fitted I had to tap a thread in the Fiberglas as it was too thick to attach the locating nut.:nono: I also made a third attempt at the interior mirror top mount. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1539 This is how it looks now. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1538 not too bad :biggrin1: The mirrors are pretty much useless and will need some fetteling :drama: I have made some card templates for the door screens and am waiting for the perspex and aluminium to arrive. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1543 |
The perspex arrived this week for the doors I used masking tape to protect it when cutting with a jigsaw and for marking out I had to be very careful as I only had one shot to get them right.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1578 I also bought new blades for the jigsaw just to be sure. they were drilled and temporarily fitted with cleko's (is that how you spell it?) http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1577 They still need some trimming and then I have to find some edging for them and a alloy strip for the bottom edge hopefully it will all work out ok :frusty: |
I made some alloy strips from 1.2 alloy sheet and shrunk them to shape the first un-drilled one i shrank too far and is useless three attempts later I managed to have two good ones.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1603 they will look a bit like this when finished http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1602 I found some alloy effect edging but it wouldn't bend around the curve at the rear top of the perspex so I had to angle them like this. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1600 Not sure if its better or worst any opinions? |

It is possible to form aluminium channel around a corner. It does take a little time and trial and error but it will finish the job off nicely.
|
This?
|
No trim
Less is more |
Thanks for the input gents I will consider all opinions then ask the wife what i am allowed to do. doh!

hand brake gaiter
Plan A I failed miserably to make a leather handbrake gaiter it could be something to do with the fact that i am useless on a sewing machine so I decided to try to make one from alloy. Plan B made some templates and cut the alloy.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1608 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1607 http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1606 But I don't like it too big and bulky The whilst reading the thread by Lancelot on vintage handbrakes i thought that looks a lot better I'll see if I can make something similar. https://www.facebook.com/midcenturye..._post_reaction Plan C It won't be the who handbrake assembly just a similar looking cover. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1605 So far so good a lot simpler with only two alloy sides and some spacers polish it up and drill some holes for effect  hoping to finish it next week end watch this space |
Oops that link didn't sorry. It is under for sale/wanted -vintage race style handbrakes

Yep that's it thanks mine won't be as good as that but should look ok I hope
|
I almost finished the hand brake cover this weekend I clamped the two half's together then marked out and drilled the holes.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1618 I also made a aluminium cover for the top and some brackets. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1615 The cover just clips on I have to decide whether to just leave it polished, drilled and polished or covered with vinyl http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1614 I just need to polish it and decide which root to take with the cover? |
Polished will look great! Gets my vote.
|
It looks like this polished
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1619 Now with or without holes? Hmmmm :drama: |
No holes in the cover for me
|
Ok gents you persuaded me polished no holed it is.
|
I decided to make a mk2 version of the top cover which looks a little better.
http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1625 but then decided the open ends at the bottom may vibrate or rattle so I made a mk3 veraion. http://www.madabout-kitcars.com/foru...pictureid=1623 so what do u think mk1 or mk3 ??? |
Love mk3! A well finished product
