bit the bullet mx250c

Well, after months of lurking, I jumped on the bandwagon and purchased an mx250c kit from chris a few weeks ago, deposit paid and keen to start. It will be built on a mk1 classic 1.8 with low miles. I will try and do some kind of build thread here.

I had a half brained idea of grafting on a coupe roofline shape onto the mx5 hardtop, I'm guessing this hasn't been done yet (probable because they are fairly valuable)

User drummajor's car is my inspiration, and I'm thinking black with BBS reps, tho wheels and offsets are confusing me at the mo

Good choice just waiting on getting the funds together to order my kit.

Gee thanks. :)
If you need any help just ask, I believe Chris and Dan are making them now with a shorter rear end/over hang. Did you order one of those?
I'm really getting to use mine a lot at the moment which is good.
The name is Jason BTW
Good luck

I haven't ordered any special features, I was going to have the jag nose opening, to avoid using mondeo grille, but since that was an extra £100 I decided the money was vest spent elsewhere...

Good news tho, I managed to pick up a hardtop in very good condition, shame its blue, but can't argue at £160

Does anyone know what wheels the guy who built the black mx250 with the 77 racing numbers used? The rears looked super dishy, and I can't see any replicas with that wild an offset

fatbloke 6th May 2016 11:10

I will be bonding a hard top on to my 250C this weekend and also had ideas about modding the roof to try and make it like the LM version. Problem was that my skills in this area are non-existent and Chris was too busy.

I'll post up some pictures once it's bonded and filled.

On the wheels, I fitted zero offset Rota Grid V. Some on here thought they were too "modern" but I'm not trying to make a replica I'm trying to make the sports car I want. You need to hunt about for the right ones. Alternatively (if you have the budget) there are various companies making split rim wheels who will give you the offset you want.

I was wanting the best of both worlds, convertible and removable mx250 coupe shape hardtop. Shouldn't be so hard if you graft a section of the mould onto a hardtop. Can I ask why your bonding yours in? Is it the regular mx5 hardtop?

fatbloke 6th May 2016 13:51

Yes, a regular MX5 hardtop. A number of reasons for bonding the roof on. The soft top which came with the car was knackered and I couldn't be arsed with replacing the vinyl. I'm not sure about the lines of the car with the soft top on and up, it's just my personal preference, others are more than welcome to disagree. I wanted rid of the Frankenstein bolts on the back as they scream MX5 and, if truth be told, I just wanted to do something different to all the other MX250's out there.

If you look through my build thread I've made a few other mods, such as louvres in the rear vents and wider arches on the front, as I wanted to make something a little unique. Oh, also it's on a MK2 just to really cock things up.

Jaguartvr 6th May 2016 14:03

you want the Jag opening then pay the extra £100, you'l regret it later down the line. A £100 is nothing compared to the £1000's you are going to spent, let alone the time!

Fatbloke, you will seriously limit you market when you finally come to sell it with a bonded on hardtop. Can't you bolt it on and make it appear more permanent, I know Chris is very busy but I'm sure he has time to give you a few ideas.

mazdarazmataz 6th May 2016 14:30

Well I'm hoping not to be spending thousands...... I work as a prepper, I work at a place that produces (amongst other things) Aston martin wings+ bootlid, Volvo parts and various truck and plant stuff out of fiberglass and composites. Most of the stuff that comes out of the moulds here comes out pretty rough, and I produce on average 30 pairs of wings a day (prepped for paint). So I'm hoping some of my skills are transferrable (and the facilities ;) )

Fatbloke, if your frankenbolts will no longer be needed......my hardtop is held on by the side and top catches at the mo

fatbloke 6th May 2016 14:41

To be honest selling it is not something I've concerned myself about, I'm building the car for me rather than what someone else might want. I know you should consider all the options but I really wanted something to my tastes.

I bought some permanent fixings for the hard top as the clips were a little "variable" in how well they kept the roof on and I had a lot of wind noise (even over the sound of the straight through exhaust). I bought a set of these which work really well as long as you use the original bolts from the clips.

I actually think the standard mx5 hardtop is very pretty, possibly the best looking hardtop of any car

fatbloke 6th May 2016 21:17

Drop me a PM with your address mazdarazamatz and I'll stick the bolts in the post to you.

mazdarazmataz 6th May 2016 21:23

Done and done :)

Same as these bolts? If they are going spare that is

Had lots of fun making quilted leather today, because, you know, quilted leather is so original ;)

Fact!

mazdarazmataz 11th May 2016 09:06

Hmmm, having made one door card in quilted leather, I'm not sure I like it.
I'll do some pictures of my failure at the weekend.

I used to have an s special with the red leather interior, miss that old girl...

mazdarazmataz 11th May 2016 09:08

Might look out for a tan interior, red ones in good nick seem unobtainable now
On the lookout for a cheap nardi also

TynoPrime 11th May 2016 10:07

The tan leather interiors can be dyed black relatively easy if that's what you're after. I bought Italian leather ready made pieces that I've glued to 50% of the plastic parts so far. Hoping to do the other 50% over the next few months.
