That's an absolutely fabulous execution...looking forward to the final pics - really inspirational.

Scottie22 10th December 2014 22:26

Terrific paint job Mac!

The car deserves to sell well!

Good luck.

Viatron 11th December 2014 17:04

Cheers Nike and Scottie your comments are very much appreciated.
Have decided that the blue hoses are too bling so am picking up some black silicon superflex hose tomorrow so will hopefully have the water system water tight tomorrow night.

Oil catch tank has arrived, last piece of bling for the bulkhead. I hadn't planned to fit one but the original and the cast Ali rocker cover have an outlet that using the original setup goes into the inlet for fumes etc to be burnt off. Unfortunately on both the original and cast cover the outlet is about half way down the side and my first idea that was to fit a mini filter direct to the stub will probably end up in a dribble of oil down the side of the engine....so catch tank it is! Pics of it in a bit.

Before I left last night I managed to have a go at the Ali Rocker Cover and am happy with the result.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-T.../IMG_01915.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s.../IMG_01917.jpg

think I'm going to leave the Ali satin rather than polish it any more. maybe just a wipe over with some wax past to protect it.

Also forgot to mention last night that I had fitted the lenses to my rear lights. On the Lambretta they originally came from the gasket behind the lamp holds the lenses in place, not so in this application so I have fitted them using clear silicon sealant so that they are both weatherproof and should it be necessary removable.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6.../IMG_01913.jpg

You can see some of the excess silicone, I left it so that hopefully it will just rub off.... hang on a mo...

Yep just run a sharp blade around the join and the excess peels off.

The trim on the ali gauge surround is now dry so later I will have a go at covering with leather.

Next up is the seat bases. I have been lucky enough to find a trimmer to look at them on Saturday with a view to doing them before Christmas. I was going to have a go myself but have decided that I'm just not up to it and I'm so happy with how its now going together I couldn't live with myself if it was let down by shoddy upholstery.

So Martin at Shropshire Stainless bent me up some 5mm Ali seat base blanks.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-l.../IMG_01907.jpg

So started with this:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-i.../IMG_01924.jpg

Which became this:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-O.../IMG_01923.jpg

Which turned into this:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-U.../IMG_01926.jpg

Which then morphed into this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-n.../IMG_01929.jpg

Couple of spacers to set the height of the seat in the base:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-e.../IMG_01931.jpg

A goodly application of PU Adhesive (yep that stuff again!)
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_.../IMG_01933.jpg

And the seat is gently pushed into position, its a tight fit but with enough spring that the adhesive get spread around. Also then piped some in around the joint of the curve in the plate to the seat

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-B.../IMG_01934.jpg

Once its set overnight I will drill and rivet using approx. 10 good long rivets per side from the inside of the seat outwards. This combination will be plenty strong enough, I have seen race seats held in cars with 4 bolts straight through the fibreglass into the floor! this beats that hands down and then some :-)

Cool solutions to the seat mounts Mac, i might copy that one.

Did the upholster suggest that you add wood or something else to the seats for the fabric to be attached to?

Looking forward to the daylight photos which at the rate you are going will be pretty soon.

Paul L 12th December 2014 06:32

Mac - Seeing your car coming together is a great boost for my morale during these cold, wet & windy winter days.

Keep up the great work, Paul. :)

Mavenl 12th December 2014 18:30

Hi,
Where did you buy that seat? It looks just perfect for my project!

Edit: I just went through practically all pages and found out you made it yourself.... My hat's off for you sir!
Could you make me one? If so, how much £?!?! (You can answer through PM)

Cheers,
Marcel

Jerome 13th December 2014 07:55

Very nice color and a great job spraying like that.
Nearly finished and it's becoming nicer and nicer!

You have to drive it a while before selling it....

Viatron 13th December 2014 20:05

the final few jobs seem to be taking ages but progress is being made.
The big news is that I dropped the seats off at the trimmers today and they should be done before the new year along with 2 headrests.
Before the seats went I riveted them to the bases.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_.../IMG_01955.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-R.../IMG_01957.jpg

The rivet heads on the inside will get a light skim of fibreglass filler to smooth over them and the projecting bits on the outside will be touched with the grinder but not removed totally.

Moving on with the instrument surround. Pic of the rubber edge trim glued in place:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-t.../IMG_01958.jpg

PU adhesive applied to the front face but not on the rubber trim:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a.../IMG_01959.jpg

First bit of edge glued to the rear, by not gluing to the rubber trim and using a high grip adhesive the rubber edge shows up which is what I was after.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-X.../IMG_01960.jpg

Better shot here:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-T.../IMG_01961.jpg

Have started replacing the neon blue silicon hoses with black as the blue was a bit too much.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w.../IMG_01962.jpg

Fitted the stainless exhaust today:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-O.../IMG_01963.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_.../IMG_01964.jpg

Hard to see from the pics but the exhaust hangs way too low at the rear, I think the rear y pipe needs flipping?

Maybe more tomorrow if I get a pass to go to the man cave.

Paul L 14th December 2014 19:09

Mac - Sorry I knew there was something I was supposed to check earlier today.

So I've just had a peak under my car with a torch and the "Y" join in my exhaust is definitely the other way up.

I can take some photos tomorrow if you want.

Good luck, Paul. :)

Viatron 15th December 2014 07:48

Paul, cheers for that, I had pretty much figured out that was the issue but its nice to have it confirmed, I'll swap it round tonight.

Paul L 15th December 2014 16:09

Mac - Just so you can see my set up.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L...o/DSCF4120.JPG

It is worth mentioning how tight the twin silencers sit to the rear of the chassis.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N...o/DSCF4121.JPG

This is why my tail pipes stick out as far as they do at the back.

I had a look at DonnySoutherner's twin pipes when I was at Micky1Mo's workshop.

He routed the silencers under the chassis so they didn't stick out as far.

Cheers, Paul. :)

Viatron 15th December 2014 18:16

Moving on, 1 step forward 1 step back...grrrr

Fitted the exhaust but the rear y section wouldn't fit either way without issues so nothing more for it.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Z.../IMG_01967.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K.../IMG_01969.jpg

that's more like it.

Weld weld weld

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7.../IMG_01971.jpg

That's better! they still need to come up a bit but will do so once I have picked up a couple of bobbins, I'm also going to support the rear of the silencers with a strap.

Wasn't happy with the plastic brake pipe clips so its all come off and I have nearly finished replacing with rubber lined stainless steel p-clips, its a pain but I must try and resist the urge to rush at the end ...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_.../IMG_01976.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_.../IMG_01977.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-x.../IMG_01978.jpg

and the tank bank on for hopefully the last time!

TTFN
Mac

Viatron 15th December 2014 18:22

I am moving on with the instrument surround but its slow going as I can only do a small section at a time in order to get the edge tight enough and the PU adhesive takes a while to go off :-(

First section done:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-e.../IMG_01980.jpg

The opposite edge is currently drying.

Unfortunately I'm off on a job tomorrow in Exmouth that starts tomorrow ends on the 23rd / 24th including next weekend so that's pretty much it until after crimble:-)

Forgot to mention a few more small steps in my last update.
Fitting the Dynamotor highlighted an issue in that it was sitting about 8mm too far forward and the belt was therefore out of line, managed to h=get the end of the front mounting lug turned down 8mm and combined with 8mm of stainless washers at the back it now fits and lines up so fitted the belt, another small victory.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--.../IMG_00000.jpg

Also fitted the rocker cover.

It does'nt look as good as your's but it's not far off your value, may-be you'v under valued your's
PS, the title photo in the add is not correct, No48 belongs to a local guy!!!!!

oxford1360 22nd December 2014 15:45

I think that's Trevor ' s car. It was his blog that introduced me to Sammios.

You are correct, the local guy who now owns it it rang me today and confirmed just that.
But as I have said the actual car being sold is not No48, the seller has just used an old photo.
That same photo might look good on my new web site :smokin:

Back to it.
The front indicators don't work for me so I have bought a pair of these
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w.../IMG_01983.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T.../IMG_01984.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o.../IMG_01985.jpg

Hopefully I'll get them fitted tomorrow

Was up the fridge on Saturday and started the wet sanding
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-T.../IMG_01986.jpg

The pics of the paint job did flatter it a little as there were a couple of runs and some worse orange peel than I was happy with

Got the passenger side flatted back with 1500 trying to get rid of this
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-l.../IMG_01987.jpg

To be fair this shot makes it look much worse than it looked to begin with but I managed to get rid of all the Orange peel so my plan to put on more paint than I really needed to was a sound one.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-H.../IMG_01988.jpg

The decision to do it was also pushed along by my finding a brand new buffing machine in the boxes from the workshop clearance I did a while ago, the gift that keeps on giving!

So think I'll pick up some G3 and G10 in the morning.

Paul L 30th December 2014 08:06

Mac - Looking forward to seeing where you mount those indicators, as they should look the part.

Do you do use your sanding blocks for the wet sanding, or is it just by hand?

Good luck with the polishing machine, Paul. :)

Viatron 30th December 2014 12:05

Sanding blocks Paul, using your hand you'll end up going through the paint. Start with nothing more coarse than 1200 and got to 1500 or 2000 then machine polish.
I'm thinking the indicators will go either side of the nose cone.

As a complete novice spray painter I found these sanding sponges to be really useful for flatting back the primer and paint -

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/pai...ge-fine-medium

http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1e8df987.jpg

They made sanding the complex curves of the body a doddle and didn't wear through anywhere as a little hand pressure moulds the sponge to the surface it's on keeping the abrasive paper 'flat' to the surface. They last well too, I think I got through about four of them to do the whole job.

Hope that makes sense. :)

a big scary monster 31st December 2014 10:49

Warm water in the bucket and a squirt of washing up liquid seems to be preferred by the paint guys I know. They also seem to have several buckets on the go using them each in turn so the sponge stays grit free. I got some sponge pads from pound land a while ago pack of ten they where excellent so went back and bought a few packs and they where next to useless. Must of been a different batch.

Viatron 5th January 2015 18:07

As scary said, a couple of buckets and I also bought a couple of squirt bottles from B&Q, filled them with clean water and just a drop, no more, of cheap washing up liquid. The washing liquid is only needed to help break the surface tension. If you can see bubbles or anything more than a hint of colour in the bottle you've used too much.

I know where T is coming from but for final colour sanding I would only ever use a solid pad or block, keep the pressure light and clean often. The real trick is knowing when to stop, if you're unsure then STOP!

This maybe my last UK post for a bit as I'm off to Sunny Sri Lanka on Wednesday night so next post will be from much much warmer climes :-)

Picked up the seats and headrests yesterday
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-g.../IMG_02020.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-x.../IMG_02019.jpg

Very happy with them. They are removable for drying by just undoing 2 press studs and levering over one front corner which is elasticated.

Almost wish I had the front to ask Mrs M if I could pop up the unit and fit them but we leave for Heathrow at 13:00 so think maybe ill not risk it :-)
