I rubbed it down and had it painted by a pro

The ripples in the bonnet happened after it was painted where I added extra glass under the bonnet to re-enforce it and the heat caused the distortion.

The screw head on the bonnet appeared before I re-enforced the bonnet and it was flexing a bit.

The door handles were put in by Chris but flexed a bit so he rewelded then and filled them. I then got those bits repainted but I guess either there was filler shrinkage or I didn't notice they weren't perfect before getting them resprayed.

So the first 2 appeared after painting because of the bonnet flexing and the last one was possibly because I rushed to paint.

Not a reflection on the quality of the paint job, but irritating none the less.

Hey Scottie, don't make the same mistake as me and use incompatible paints. My top coat has crazed like mad, I am putting off the weekend sanding it all back off.

That is my intention- my Z300S will be at Stoneleigh still in white gel coat with white primer in places and its try-out red stick-on stripes.

I'd rather be driving it.

Not sure Scottie, just know it went wrong.

When you get reactions like that and not saying that it is the same but I had it went I sprayed an Alfa GT it was due to a reaction on different solvents. The best way to avoid any reaction at all is to use waterbased paint much less likely to have an adverse reaction. HOWEVER I am not a professional and have NOT painted hundreds of cars just a couple of handfuls and thus mine advise is from painful experience and mostly others advice.

If you do get a reaction there are two ways of dealing with it - sand it back to metal and start again (not my favoured route) or sand it back to smooth and seal it. you can get dedicated paint sealers or a trick I learnt was use a good lacquer.

I put in an awful lot of work today, but have been well rewarded for the effort.

Before I started to wet and dry the body, I had to put pipes on the two drain holes in the boot area, or the boot would get wet.

I can report that the drain holes work well!

I rubbed all the body down,then I decided to chuck some paint on it..

I am well pleased with the paint I chose for lots of reasons.
I like the colour, but basically it is an industrial paint, I chose it because it is fast drying, easy to apply, easy to polish, hard wearing, and has a very glossy finish. (I just sound like I have shares in the company!)

I intended to put on a "guide coat" to see what more work was required, and sort of got carried away.

When I saw how good the finish was, I chucked on the whole litre of paint,and did doors bonnet, the lot.

None of it is perfect, but fairly acceptable I think.

I will get another litre of paint tomorrow, and the good bit is, its cheap at only £25 for a litre.

I am certain that the "prophets of doom" will slag me off for using this type of paint, but look at the results, and judge for yourself.

If I'm brutally honest, the front half of the car needs a little more work to make it as good as the arse end, so I will sort it out.

That looks like a very good finish straight out of the gun unless the camera's lying. Is it cellulose? A link to where you got your paint would be useful Scottie.

Polish / sand / smooth the head light recesses. Mine are rough and it drives me nuts. Another thing to do before a respray.

Not nagging but yours don't look perfect either.

Gits to do because of the tight diameter so if you work oput a good way of doing it then please let me know

Well, it seems my paint job has impressed more than just me!!

I am not very skilled at spraying, but this paint is amazing stuff.

To answer Mr Towed, no it is not cellulose, it is one-pack nitro-acrylic high gloss topcoat.

And yes, it came straight out of the gun like that.

And for anyone else interested, here are the details: it is made by Lechler,

and they say it is for restoring "old cars"

I bought my paint locally, at £20 plus vat per litre, but other companies seem to be charging £30 plus vat.

I think this stuff is way better than cellulose, and will use it again.

Like I said though, my car will need more work, as now I can see where I need more flatting, but I am looking forward to chucking more paint at it if it comes out like it did this time!
