Molleur. Thanks; I had already enlarged the slots as much as i dare , leaving the 2 centre "guides" only 3mm wide. (not sure if it show in the attached pic).

Have fitted my home made Stainless Gear shift plate this week, bedded on foam and screwed down tightly into wooden box.
Hoping this would insulate against rattle, resonance and transmission...
