Default coolant pipes

Hi all,
If you look at manufacturers pipes they always have a lip at the end to prevent hoses popping off, I would be concerned not to have some way of securing hoses, I f you were unaware of losing water suddenly, engine failure soon follows.
I saw Doc Watsons method in which kit, I think he warmed the end up with a blow torch and knocked a cone in to form the flair. I have done it a different way and so far so good. I have used 10mm wide electricians tape and wrapped it around the pipe about 5mm in and created a lip about 2mm depth. With the hose slid on and secured it can't be budged. This was very easy to do and because the end of the pipe is the same diameter as before, fitting the hose is easy.
