Hi Your mate is right.
If you check your V5C section 7 at the bottom it confirms this.
Also there is conformation on section 10 the V5C/2.
The important stuff is always in the small print.

When you come to taxing the vehicle go to the post office with your V5C tell them it's "historic" and they should confirm it, issue you with a receipt with "nil" payment on it, take your V5C and send it off to DVLA for the change.

Well that's how it should work any way
