Before ordering a cam sensor, remove it and see how many pins it has. My 2000 2.8 had 2 pins, 1998 2.8 3 pins, 2002 2.2 3 pins.
People say don't buy cheap cam sensors but being a cheapskate I always do, partly because I'm never sure if they are the part at fault. The last 2 I bought were £17 each (eBay), genuine BMW were £120 each. Both have worked perfectly (so far!).
