Thanks Patrick - but I think I can manage without "doing a trial" now. I have looked at the spring plates closely and they just seem to be spot welded to an area of the trailing arm that is flat. It should be relatively straightforward (lol) to remove the existing plates and fit my new ones about 1/2" offset.

PS going to look at a 318ti this w/e in Reading 33k miles and fitted with the lux pack - only problem is it's green...
