Thumbs up tricky exhaust silencing

hi guys, 1st post so go easy on me!!

anyone got any tips on exhaust silencing in a very tricky situation, i have taken my evoloution v8 kit car to 2 exhaust specialists and they have failed to come up with any solutions so far.

i have a track day at oulton park book on saturday and my db reading is 110 and the course limit is 105.

as you can see from the attatched photo, the problem lies in the 45 degree bend at the end of the exhaust pipe which will not allow an internal silencer to be inserted, nor a clamp on muffler to be attatched. no-one is able (or willing) to remove the elbow because the likelyhood of damage is extremely high.

any advice will be gratefully recieved,

cheers

Welcome!

Can't you just move the collectors forward by a couple of feet then fit a cobra style silencer each side with perforated heat sheid surounds?

Depending on where you are, a number of us gave had custom exhausts made from differing companies

thanks chris, thats something i'l be looking to do in the future to solve the problem permanately.

however, whats required now is a 'quick fix' as the bd test is in the morning so i think my trackday fee maybe going down the drain!!

Okay RayC there is a fast and dirty solution that will get you passed the track-day test.

I had a similar problem with a 2l pinto that was 105dB with a limit of 100 but remember that every 3dB is twice as loud.

You need to load (not pack) the pipe, (where and how much is your choice), with chicken wire and wire wool.

The chicken wire will act to hold the wool in place at a suitable hold point i.e. a bend or a joint, or it will just blow out. In your case perhaps load each pipe and put the chicken wire at the two 'y' joints just before the 'what passes as' a silencer!

Remember that engine performance may be affected and the back pressure may cause the engine to run a tad warmer but other then that I have had no problems. I remove the plug for road use by the way.

My box, very similar to your set up is a straight through pipe, I have a pin through the pipe, at the back of the box that I put in place to hold the wool in back. If you use steel wool it will eventually burn and break up and slowly blow out, stainless steel will go blue but takes longer to be digested.

So at the track day test I push in the SS wool, then the chicken wire then fit the pin and 'short of a second lot of wool and a second test' I have not failed to run yet. The look of amazement on the tester’s faces tapping, the tacho to make sure its reading right, with interesting with comments like, 'don't know that you dun but it’s a pass this time...' do not breath a word at this point just smile….

Enjoy your day, nice motor by the way..
