Default Walbro fuel pumps

Just a quick question.....

Does anyone have experience with Walbro fuel pumps? I've got a 255 pump on my car, and before yesterday it was a noisy blighter, emitting a fairly high pitch constant tone.

Since yesterday's drive to the SVA it's tone has dropped quite appreciably.

Is this to be expected with sustained use, or am I correct to suspect yesterday's trip has claimed another expensive component?!?!

(pops off to trundle the internet...)

After a quick search, I'm now wondering if I've got a low grade forgery pump!

My pump is a Walbro/sytec 190 in-tank upgrade. It was always fairly noisy and isn't exactly silent now but may be a little quieter. I could believe that pumps like that with close tolerances might bed in over the first few hours of running and quieten down. I assume it's still doing the pressure?

Makes me wonder (as my own pump arrangement is a little bit heath robinson) whether it might be worth fitting a fuel pressure switch for a warning light/buzzer in case of reduced pressure to save engine damage. Although maybe our ECU handles that anyway?

Ah well, no fuel pressure sensor there :-(

Well I have fuel pressure, but it takes longer to climb now, and as I'm running a twin setup (Walbro is inline), I think in my case the lower tone means lower speed, which in turn means.... kaput!

I've had the pump running for hours and hours prior to yesterday, so for it to change tone in 3hrs of "proper" driving, leads me to suspect it's shafted.

I agree with the pressure warning, especially if the charged route is taken.

I've just been out and fired the car up, and curiously the pump is now working fine. Quite why it didn't work before is anyone's guess.

Providing it stays working, I'm happy. Phew, no need to spend £100+ on another pump!
