Default LSD or not

Hi guys
I have a 1998 2.8 Z3 base on my 250swb. I have just been doing a full service on the car. I wanted to do the diff oil too but am not sure if it is an LSD or not. I know it is supposed to have a tab on the diff with an identity number but that is missing. On bmw forums it appears that some cars had LSD and some didn’t. How to I check what I have
Thanks in advance

There should be a letter "S" on the diff casting, as well as on the missing tag beginning with "S". Most 1998 Z3's came with a Torsen visco differential and not an LSD. Hope this helps. There is a ton of miss-information about this. I too, have a manual 1998 2.8 as the base for my 250 SWB Coupe still in process. If you have the Z-3 handbook for that car, it may help. If not, let me know and I'll peek at mine.

From memory, there's a difference between clutch type and gear type LSD's and I have no idea which type BMW fit.

Try jacking the whole back end up so both wheels are off the ground, then turn one wheel and observe the other. If it turns in the same direction you definitely have a clutch type LSD fitted, if it turns in the opposite direction you either don't have an LSD or you have a gear type one fitted.

If it's the latter, drive the car onto a verge so one rear tyre is on a loose surface and the other on tarmac, then accelerate away, if the tyre on the loose surface spins you have no LSD, if it doesn't spin then you do have an LSD of some type.

Just rag it around the nearest round about and see how well it drifts?

...then while you're upside down waiting for Trumpton to show up with their jaws of life, you can ask a helpful passer-by to take a closer look at your diff and see if it has LSD stamped on it anywhere.
