Hi Ross,

You can add mine which at the moment has no colour (will probably end up dark blue).

Alfa Romeo 3ltr 12valve V6 engine and gearbox
Alfa Romeo 164 fully adjustable steering column and switchgear
284 x 22mm vented front discs and 4 pot calipers
284 x 22mm vented rear discs and MR2 rear handbrake calipers (not yet fitted)
bespoke pedal box with adjustable f/r bias
cable gear-change mechanism with a bespoke machined aluminium gate (a la Lamborghini)
battery moved to front wheel well for better weight distribution
electric door and boot release, electric mirrors (mazda MX5), integrated Pioneer Avic satnav, electromagnetic reversing sensor

The car is currently residing in my garage with all suspension, engine and electrics finished - just got to get round to upgrading the rear brakes and then acquiring and fitting the glass and finishing the bodywork.

I've been working on this (on and off) for nearly 14 years and it has followed me round from place to place, I just need about 6 months off work and then I reckon it would be finished!

Bought from a guy named Duncan Stevens all those years ago, don't know if he gets on here but I'm sure someone on here remembers him.

Regards
Jon

Hi Gos,
It's been a while since I was on here - you wanted to discuss the fitting of the Alfa engine. It's a bit tight but ok.

Here goes....

It is fairly straightforward in terms of engine mountings etc. the main snag is the gearbox casing fouling the n/s upper wishbone. This I had to modify by replacing a straight tube with a curved one so it curves over the top of the end of the gearbox.
The beauty of the Alfa V6 is that the gearbox is designed for the engine so you don't have to worry about adapter plates, disintegrated clutches etc. oh, and it has an intermediate driveshaft and bearing built in so you get equal (ish) length driveshafts.
Driveshafts will need to be modified for the inner cv joints

Don't forget to upgrade the brakes!

Gearshift can be cabled - the newer 3.2 V6 engined cars have cable change anyway and it would be an easy swap - mine is 3ltr 12 valve and the gearbox selector took a lot of modification to get it to work! I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you are very confident with your engineering skills: welding, machining etc.

I'm an Alfaholic and have owned a lot of these cars. I currently have a 3.2 Gt (my wife runs a 156 JTS 2.0 and I'm selling a 2.0 twin spark GTV - our poor kids!), this engine is amazing and a joy to feel and hear - what a sound! From a low rumble to a sonorous roar! If i was doing this all over again I would go for this newer engine albeit with more ecu wiring challenges than the old Motronic system which was quite simple to work with. There are specialists out there that can do this though.

I hope I haven't gone on too long but this summarises the work involved - worth it if you want that v6 torque, revs (the 3.2 pulls like a train from 800 to 7000 rpm!) and of course that sound.

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the forum. I see that you've asked about fitting the Alf Romeo V6 engine, my experiences are as in my post above. I don't know much about the Ford engines although I've heard the Duratec V6 engines are really good.

Reliability for the Alfa V6 is as good as any engine as long as it's maintained properly (like anything really), it is quite expensive for parts though - cambelts, tensioners, gaskets etc. Have a look at the Alfaworkshop website for ideas of costs for various parts etc.

Whereabouts in the country are you based?

Regards
Jon

Default Mirabeau

Hi Jon
Good to hear from you. Was hoping you might reply
Have you finished your car yet ?
My engine thoughts are mixed - starting Cosworth , my mechanic friend has lots experience Ford.
I giving lot consideration to Alfa - was thinking 3.0 V6 24 valve . Now you mention the 3.2 .............!! Even more to add to my expansive list things to consider . I presume with it being manual the physical challenges similar to yours .
I do like idea engine/gearbox/clutch same unit rather adapted

I live Lincolnshire . Where you based . Would love to come see / hear your car .
appreciate your contact
best wishes Dave

Default Deon Mirabeau owners website

Hi all
Not been any activity on this theme long time.

Mine,
Deon Silver N266 BYB. Fully stripped for:

- Alfa V6 engine
- 5 stud wheel conversion ( likely to use Campagnolo 7.5 x14 wheels from Superperformance and 215/70 vr 14 XWX tyres
- have had front wishbones re- manufactured 30 mm wider
- footwell widening planned soon
- modified steering position
-new pedal box - may lower foot well area to lower chassis level ( 25 mm)
- brakes
- cooling
- thinking of splitting rear canopy to separate engine from luggage
- recover roof - shorten canvas over engine cover
-exernal door locks
- clap hand wipers
- dino style rear lights instead Nissan 100 zx
- front hinge front bonnet
- etc etc etc !!!
Current thoughts to paint Scuro blue -- eventually ??2016??!!

What news hard- top production?

Would be good know what others have ,what planned and at what stage.

Best wishes to all
Dave

Hi Dave,

I see you have a lot of work planned for your Mirabeau!

Sorry I never replied to your previous post - I guess family/work commitments result in me having a limited memory of things I should do....

Anyway, I'm based in Gloucestershire (in fact I bought my car from a guy in Louth - that can't be far from you?)

I haven't touched the car for a while now and this year my plan is to organise the garage and then maybe I can start work on her again. I'm not sure what state the engine is in now as it hasn't been started for a couple of years!

All being well I could get her going again and perhaps post a vid to Youtube so you can see/hear the state of things.

It will be interesting to see what you come up with regarding the hard-top as this is something that has been on my mind for a long time.

Regards
Jon

Default Deon - update

Hi Jon
Good to hear back- I fully understand delay.
I am at the " enthused " stage and so keen to learn and hear what others achieving.
Louth approx 35 miles.
Briefly so far:
Engine/ gearbox - 2.5 V6 achieved- like you said had to curve upper wishbone, new mounts and stays. 50 mm shortening n/s driveshaft. Fits well

Hubs: have used Alfa 166 hubs and now have 5 studs
Wheels/ tyres: bought Campagnolo wheels Superperformance, Michelin XWX 215/14 tyres. LOT sorting offset to enable .........
Chassis: footwells widened 3.25 inches,, strengthening top tunnel, part floor sheeted ( to allow me cut fibreglass from under feet -> another 25 mm depth of footwell. Other strengthening + welding
Suspension: front wishbones - new 30 mm wider, allows longer damper and travel. Rear lower wishbone repositioned 40 mm higher and also widened ( offset wheels mainly). - will need lower steering rack approx 7-10 mm reduce bump-steer
Wipers: JUST about sorted design and specification for clap hand- prototype used series 3 jaguar cable drive and wheel boxes. .
Roof: nil done- but my thoughts are to try and design very much like the 355 spider roof ie with buttress effect.

Lots more
Do keep in tough. Would love to meet. Not many of us Mirabeau owners
Best wishes
Dave

Hi Dave and Jon. Great to hear about your projects and that you are going with Alfa V6 and Alfa 166 hubs/campagnolo-style wheels as per the original, optional ones for the Dino. I have a set of cromodora original wheels and am looking at adapting the 166 hubs. My plans are long term dreams though. I live in New Zealand and as far as I know no Deon, JH DGT or other replica kits have made their way here. I'd love to be proved wrong though! There are a few Stratos kits and one Dino 206SP sports racing car replica made locally though. If you could post lots of photos, descriptions, how to-s, of your cars it would be great to follow your build. I'm especially interested in how you adapted the Alfa 166 hubs and the cv joints and drive axles.
Cheers

Hi
The buttress effect hardtop won't work or certainly won't do you car any favours, the rear buttress on my hardtop would scuff and scratch the paint on the quarter panels. I was working on changing the hardtop but also changing the shape of the side windows as otherwise the hardtop looks like something done by a child and does not look right.

It will end up being a hardtop that suits the curves of the car, but should still hopefully look right.

Default Deon Mirabeau

Jon, If you are still on page, a belated thank you for the info in 2012.I have fitted an Alfa 2lt JTS semi auto engine and box. The thought of fitting the 3lt alfa with the power it has, frightened me somewhat. This part of Spain is mountainous, with narrow roads and some peculiar cambers. My Mirabeau suffers from lift off oversteer, which can be sudden and dramatic. Can you or anyone reading this post give me some info on the best remote brake servo to fit to the system. I am tired of using both feet on the pedal. Saludos. Gos

Hi Gos, what made you decide to go for the jts engine? Apart from the worry about the car being overpowered of course.

This is something I have thought about in the past - would the car handle the power and would the weight of the engine create snap oversteer - as I have yet to actually finish my car and drive it on the road properly this is something I guess I will find out for myself one day....

As for the remote servo, I know that some of the Deon cars were fitted with them but I'm not sure which would be the best to go for. The servo units were bolted to the sheet steel panel behind one of the headlights iirc.

I decided to go for a more efficient pedal ratio and adjustable front to rear brake bias. Yet to be bedded in but they felt ok on a short test drive a while ago - I have to say that full throttle was ballistic and scary so good brakes are a must! Perhaps you've made the sensible choice with the 2ltr engine.

Let us know if you find a suitable servo unit and what it's like to fit/the difference made etc.

Regards
Jon

Should love to have a Dino, but instead I have a 1970 MGB! Point of this post is to say I fitted a remote brake servo not long ago, obtained from the MG Owners' Club (here: www.mgocspares.co.uk ). Don't know if it would suit the underbonnet space in your Dino, but the guys on the MGOC spares desk are mighty helpful on the telephone if you want dimensions, etc...

Thanks for the info - they are not as expensive as I thought. Will it do both circuits or do you need to fit two of them - front and rear?

Good point - the MGB has single circuit brakes as it pre-dates dual circuit set-ups. Presumably the Ferrari does too, but you have to have dual circuit brakes to get a replica on the road...
Can anyone on here say whether installing one in each circuit will work, please?

Hola Jon, I thought 150 bhp was enough, the main attraction was the semi automatic box. The original Deon driving position was awful. When I drove down to Alicante, after 1300Klm I had developed what I would term a simian crouch, I couldn't stand straight for a week. The servo I got very cheap, however its x3, so braking remains to be tested. Im sure that blowing hard on the pedal should be enough to stop the car. I want to try and get a complete soft top, or even a frame for the mirabeau. Also an 80mm electronic speedometer. If anyone reading this, has same or knows of a contact, please leave a message with the PM section. Saludo, gos
