No there's a thing. When I put the first coats of primer on I used thinner bought from the same company. First two coats went on okay and then I left it to dry overnight. When I put the next coat on the next day, after a light sanding, the thinned paint started to strip the first coats off so I am now putting the paint on without thinning.

For info the thinners I bought was Rustoleum 160 which says it's for thinning Combicolour paint for spraying so I'm not sure what went wrong. Applying the colour not thinned seems to work so I'm going to go with that for the rest of the car.

I used a roller and painted a MK1 Escort . The paint was Dulux gloss !

It was my Autograss car, it looked ok from 20 feet ! I'm sure that with better paint and taking your time to wet and dry it back , followed by T cut and polish you will get a good result. Not sure how hard your paint will go , it might take a long time. Perhaps an acrylic paint would work better ?

Fatbloke - The way I look at it, what have you got to lose?

So what if it is not perfect, you will still have a car that stands out from the crowd.

If it helps, my paint was supplied to be brushed/rollered straight from the tin, but needs thinners for spraying.

I'm still a long way from paint, but I will not be using thinner when I apply it with a brush/roller (TBC).

Good luck, Paul.

Out of interest, how long did you have to wait between coats to be able to wet an dry it?

Thanks Paul. I agree, as long as it is finally all one colour I don't really care and after I sanded back the bonnet quite dramatically the orange peel disappeared.

Mazdarazmataz, I gave it about 24 hours between coats but only gave the surface a very light sand with 400 grit between coats to give it a key. For the deep sand and polish, I left the bonnet for a week to harden.

BTW, just had a look at the website where I bought the paint and I bought the wrong thinners - oops. Here's a link to their site with all the tech info:

Thanks for info, always been curious about coach painting techniques.

Shows how ignorant I am, I thought thinners were thinners! Didn't realise there were different types..

I do like that colour, it's going to look stunning once it's all painted. Is it Fiat Broom Yellow?

Thanks Mr T. It was the brightest yellow on the Rustoleum colour pallet so isn't car specific.

Here's another question, what quantity of paint do you guesstimate you will use?

I've bought 5 litres of primer and colour. I'm hoping that will give me 2 coats of base and 3 of top coat.

Hmm so roughly the same quantity as if you were spraying celly or 2k

Your colours better than the JCB yellow we use at work

Five litres of paint mixed 50/50 with high-gloss thinners did me about six coats (I lost count). That was sprayed on though, you might get through more paint using a roller. Or less

I would say less because no overspray? But hey this is pioneering territory!

Taken me over 3 years to get to this point mazdarazmataz so don't beat yourself up on how slow it fast the build progresses.

The orange (lemon?) peel is quite bad but as I discovered on the bonnet of you get enough paint on you can cut this back. One other note of caution, if you are painting a really bright colour with the garage door open the flies love it. These can be removed when the paint is dry with a little bit of wet and dry
