part build help
hi everyone, newbie here
rhigt, where to begin?, ill keep it simple
ive always loved kit cars from waaay back when, but always owned production cars, very nice ones though, part my problem is my 306 cabriolet, the car is stunning, in perfect condition and i try to pamper as much as possible, and theres the problem, more so these days im not enjoying driving it every day since it feels like the weather / local authorities / other road users are against me so ive decided to sell up and buy a run about for day to day and a kit for the summer (ideally fully built) , good plan me-thinks,
my shortlist in order of preferance goes somthing like
1. minari roadsport
2. quantum 2+2
3. quantum H4
4. Dutton leggera
5. onyx firecat (though this is a maybe since im the wrong side of "average" build and 6ft 2)
looking about ive found quite a few part built kits that seem to be a bargian but these will need an IVA to get registerd, so my question is how would this work?, my understanding is ill need to convince the tester that i built the car so how can i do that if sombody else did?
any help will be very much apreciated and i hope to join you in kit car ownership soon

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
I don't think you have to prove that you have built the car necessarily, somebody else could have done the majority of the work. As long as they are an amatuer builder and it can be proved then you should be ok, so photos of the build in progress on a residential property and a statement from the builder would be useful.
The legislation is really just to distinguish between a commercial business building it and the home DIYer.
This is just my understanding so it might be worth you contacting your local testing centre and asking them.

Depending how far the build is, I'd probably strip it and rebuild it anyway to clean everything up and make sure it's all done properly... but thats just me

Hello and welcome.
I've the same as you and the other side of average build. And an inch smaller!
But I fit into the 5EXI no problem. Would have even more room with Lotus Elise seats or something.
Here I am with plenty of layers of cloths on due to being a bit cold!

i would have thought there would have been more information on the web about this exact issue but i cant seem to find it

Jsut a comment but there is a job'sworth at the IVA office who cast doubt on my Marlin Cabrio build. I sent the application form in with some build photos, the original kit receipt and a copy of the donor V5. I got a phone call from him saying he wasn't convinced I had built it myself, which lead to a progressively heated phone call as I finally asked him if he was accusing me of lying.
In the end I sent in a copy of every photo and receipt I had, and a letter from my wife saying I had spent the last 7 years in the garage and she would be pleased to get me back sometime.
I think you will be able to convince them however with photos of you taking the vehicle part built from the old owner, with receipts for the part built kit.

Right then. after many emails and ambiguous responses ive finally got the following from VOSA technical department, to be fair the chap who contacted me was very helpful and pleasant, its the whole system that leads to the confusion, so here it is if it is of help to any others.......
Good morning Mr.King ,
Thank you for your kind words and further enquiry regarding this matter. I
appreciate that this is a complex area and the consequences of not fully
understanding the requirements are dire, so I shall endeavour to clarify
the situation further.
This whole situation has been brought about by professional builders
abusing the Amateur Built route to IVA. There is a clear advantage to this
approach in that they become exempt from the emissions requirement of the
test which is ultimately of financial significance. To try to deter this
from continuing, the requirement for photographs and invoices was
introduced some two years ago. Having said that, VOSA is still keen not to
deter genuine members of the public from applying for this exemption from
regulation.
With that in mind, providing all the necessary photographs and receipts are
available, there should not be an issue with Amateur Build status being
granted. Where a vehicle has been part built, providing the invoices and
photographs are available from the original builder, this will still be
considered as an Amateur Built vehicle HOWEVER, it is worth pointing out
that the regulations clearly state that the majority of the vehicle must be
built by the person making the application. Therefore, if you have only
completed the final stages of the build (less than 20% perhaps) then you
could not be classed as an Amateur Builder. This is again to deter the
professional builders from buying a near complete car in order to qualify
for the exemption.
With regard to someone building a vehicle on your behalf, this is viewed as
a complete process and not a part-time operation. Therefore it is expected
that someone making this declaration, would have employed someone (who is
not in the business of building vehicles) to fully complete the vehicle
under their supervision and guidance. It would not apply to someone who has
bought a vehicle already assembled.
Ultimately, if VOSA are not satisfied that the applicant has met the
requirements of the regulations, then Amateur Build status will not be
granted. In these circumstances the only two options left are either a
complete rebuild of the vehicle or Very Low Volume with the strict
emissions controls that this entails.

To be honest, VOSA are strict but fair. It's open to the roff they get from the builder.
Just send them pictures of your build, in your garage or what ever, you will be ok. It's to deter the businesses and garages in it to make a profit it sounds like. Not the likes of you and me.

Just joined the forum, but found this old thread- in terms of Onyx Firecat I am 6 ft 2 and not on the furthest back notch of my firecat seat position. I have a second which is for sale.
