It will take a few months before I'm back on building.

I'm building the Sportster with a Ford Scorpio Cosworth 2,9i V6 24Valve engine and driving stuff of it. It's in rolling condition now, needed to get it to the new garage.

My site is moved too for months ago, but I lost my password to this site so it took me a while to respond ....

Sure, in the Netherlands so left hand driven....
Hello PJC

Welcome to the Sportster forum :-)

What is the car scene over there? We were in the Netherlands for a holiday last year and it seems you are just as much "petrol heads" as we are in the UK. Do you have something similar to the SVA test like we do - or is it easier or more difficult to build a kit car in your country?

Easier here in the Netherlands, NO WAY.
We have something called the RDW.

The way to go for me is have my kit for SVA in England, and as it looks right now the talk is that we have to have the car at least half a year at english license plate, but that's not sure yet.
Then I have to import it. Not only pay BTW (=tax) but also BPM. That's another way to get money in the pocket of the state....

Anyway, the RDW is the official government department for vehicles and they are keen on everything. It means that a catalyst is necessary and a lot more stuff. The look at the kitcar as a brand new car that will be imported.
So the building I hope to start with again in a few months, but I'm not afraid of the SVA. The RDW can give me more headaches because it's absolutely not sure what they will do in the next years.

Petrol heads, yes we are mad too !
Lot's of farmers and scrapyard owners do cross with there cars. Forward and even backward races with DAF'jes. Stockcar races we have lot's of here and even more (technical) fun is tractor pulling. Yes, put an engine of an airplane on a modified tractor and try to get as much weight to the other end of the pitlane. Do you know what I mean? Do you have that too?

Thumbs up

Welcome Will,
glad to see we have another active Sportster builder!

I'm building an e30 2.0 litre as well.
My donor car was an 'F' reg 1989 320i.

I bet Robin will be interested in your spring seat problem, so tell us more about what happened.

Do you have any pictures?

So now we are 10.

Are there any more out there that want to own up?

Peter

Hello Will - welcome to the forum. I also have problems with the chassis spring seat positions. When I discussed it with Marlin when I discovered it some time ago they weren't very helpful... I would be intersted to know what they did for you to resolve the problem.

Kind regards

Robin

Hi,

Basically it was not possible to mount the spring seat onto the threaded stub welded to the chassis. (I have tried to load the pictures, even when cropped they were several hundred bytes to big). Anyway I was pointed here - madaboutout-etc..

I then sent them pictures and got them to look at them, they then agreed there was a fault and would send a fix, involve cutting the old thread stub off and welding the fix on. Not being a welder this was a major problem they did make another suggestion which also wasn't practical. Anyway I waited to see if the fix arrived and if I could do anything with it, it didn't arrive.

After a several weeks I contacted them again asking for a new chassis as it was not usable, after a little discussion I offered a compromise which was for them to come out and fix it when they came out this way for a show (Donnigton). They did and I am pleased with it, I got the solution I want. The spring seat are now fitted and up perfectly.

Hi Will
Thanks for the info. I shall now try and re-negotiate a simlar fix with Marlin. My spring mounts don't sound quite as bad as yours were. I am able to fit the spring seats but the bump stops dont line up. I would be intersted to see your pictures though. Any chance you can email them to me? martinclan@tiscali.co.uk

Cheers

Robin

Hello,

I'm not sure if I qualify or not but I'm building a BMW engined Cabrio. So not exactly a Sportster but at least its a Marlin with a BMW engine !

I bought a part built kit earlier this year and I'm slowly re-building and converting it from the Ford Pinto to the BMW engine (2.5l M20). If anyones interested I've put some photos of the build so far on Flickr:

Ok, so I thought it was time to update this thread...........

so far we have................

1 - Martinclan, (Robin) Bedfordshire E30 2.5 Mechanics almost done - body next...
2 - Andy Dane, Bromsgrove, E36 2.5
3 - Peterux - Peter, Uxbridge, E30 2.0 - engine running but no body yet!
4 - Patrick & Richard, Hampshire, E30 2.5 with a few tweaks and driven
5 - Stuart, On the road but still tinkering.
6 - Jason, Northampton, E30 2.5 The Chassis has arrived!
7 - Jeremy, belfast e30 chassis, e36 engine 2.5
8 - Alfie, somerset. E30 2.5. Keep getting distracted, too much else going on but slowly getting there.
9 - PJ, from Holland, Cosworth 2.9 v6, just moved house
10 - Will, not sure where, E30 2.0 with the best spring seats in town
11 - Simon, rebuilding a Marlin Cabrio with E30 2.5 in the cleanest garage on earth

Have I missed anyone? (Apologies for any errors)

After another whole year of kitcar shows, do we have any new builders out there who have taken the plunge and placed an order or maybe just starting to strip their donor?

Please update the list above or add your name to the list..........

Peter

Do I still count as a builder even though someone else is doing it for me?

And someone on another thread commented that they weren';t trying to think of the overall cost - I decided that I don't want to know cos mines gotta be silly money now I'm paying for the build!

Is it unlucky to be number 13?
E36 Sportster.

I was never superstitious anyway.

Number 12 it is then.

The bodys on, floors in and off the stands.
Waiting for prop and interior to arrive.
I've had the car running briefly, but still need rad hoses and exhaust.

Wow, you've had the engine running without rad hoses or exhaust, that's brave!

How did you get on with fitting the body?
Any tips, as I am just starting this stage.

Do you have any pictures you could post for us all to see?

thanks

Peter (no.3)

(Hey, if we ever all get together we should have racing numbers made up )
